Not trains but buses, hopefully this is in the correct forum.

With the Hopper fare, you cannot have a break in the journey. Say one takes a bus, train then bus, with both buses within an hour. Can one use 2 separate cards (one for bus and one for train), to get the hopper fare?

I see no issue with doing this since ultimately you've paid for all of the travel that you are doing - if anyone comes to check tickets just remember to present the correct card

My recollection, but I have never done it, is that train in the middle of two buses within an hour does not cancel the hopper fare. It was a change made subsequent to the initial implementation.

If you travel on Tube, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line, Emirates Air Line or River Bus services in between Hopper journeys, you'll be charged a standard fare. The Hopper fare will still apply to any further bus and tram journeys made within one hour of first touching in.

Yes, that doesn't mention train journeys on the National Rail scale but would there really be an exception?

I do a bus-tube-bus journey regularly, using the same Oyster card for all, and as long as it all fits within the hour, I'm not charged for the second bus. Saves me a princely 10p for the day's journeys compared to the daily cap!

I don't think there could be since some journeys such as Ealing to Hayes & Harlington could be Elizabeth line or National Rail so if it works on Elizabeth line it must work on NR too

I read that as:
Take bus - get charged £1.65, then take (e.g. tube) get charged whatever the appropriate fare is for that journey, and IF you then take a bus/tram still within the 62 minutes allowed from starting the first original bus journey, then you will be charged an additional £0.00

I've certainly done lots of times recently, e.g. Bus to Victoria (£1.65). Train to East Croydon (£something). Another bus from East Croydon (within the hour) that bus £0.00, and in fact another bus still squeezed in within the hour £0.00!

So IME no need to mess around with 2 cards, just use the same one (and then also potentially benefit from daily/weekly capping)

Thanks, I didn't realise they got rid of that requirement!

It was never intended to be a restriction. The Mayor came up with his election winning idea without realising how complex it was to impliment. The first iteration was an extension of the bus/tram joined up journey in New Addington. Allowing more than two buses and a potential train in the middle was achieved with the complete re-write.
