Are there any plans still in place to introduce Class 190 2-coach sets on the Heart of Wales line as originally promised? It seems that TfW are merely refurbishing their present stock of Class 153s? Also will 5 trains in each direction be introduced by end of 2022?

Thank you! Thought so! I meant 170s sorry! So TfW progress eh?

153s are better suited to low speed stopping operations than 170s due to the gearing. 170s would never go into direct drive and so would waste a load of fuel churning up the transmission oil. I'm in a way a bit surprised they don't just stick an extra couple of 2-car 197s on that order and use those; their mechanical transmission would be better, and level boarding is mostly irrelevant as most of the platforms are quite low.

The TfW 170s are eventually going to move over to EMR.
