Hello there
I wondered if anyone out there can help me? I am hoping to find someone who can tell me what trains ran on the old Honington to Lincoln branch line from the 1930s to the very early 1960s untill it closed.
Thank's

We've had at least one thread on this line in the not too distant past

It doesn't really tell you what you want, I'm afraid - except that V2s and pacifics used the line with diversion traffic. I do not know, but suspect it might have been B1s at the end on 3 or 4 coaches? IF the trains were shorter still, maybe some kind of old LNER tank. Somehow can't see them using L1s or V1/3s on such a rural route, BICBW.

There may be more threads on the line if you do a search.

Timetable World has the 1947 LNER timetable. Table 64 has the Grantham-Lincoln service of five trains - three locals, two 'express', one with London coaches.

Local services on this line were DMU in its last years; my only journey on it, in summer 1964 (the year before closure) was made thus.

The only dmus I can remember on the line were class 114 which were much used in Lincolnshire.

Details of all the locomotive types used, from the construction of the line onwards, are given in the book 'The Lincoln to Grantham Line via Honington' by Stewart E. Squires, published by The Oakwood Press in 1996.

I was born in Caythorpe and can just remember steam-hauled services but not the types of locomotives used. However, the above book indicates that prior to dieselisation in 1956 passenger services were often worked by B1s, B12s and A5s. Also appearing on goods services were J39s.

As mentioned, the line was often used for diversions and whatever types normally worked the east coast main line were able to be used without restriction as the line had been brought up to main line standards prior to World War ll.
