During the last 100 years the rail industry in this land has had many forms and the wheel has turned full circle [no pun] from individual lines run buy one company [LNWR, GE, LBSC etc] to todays TOC's. What in your opinion was the best set-up during those hundred years. Lines? The Big Four? Nationalised? or what?

Its a "No Brainer" mate British Railways/British Rail !

Not sure, collective UK wants to decide whether rail and probably bus services are a national need or luxury today, but tomorrow?.

Assuming they do some day, then your and many other linked questions become relevant and merit a formal government answer.
