6M31 left Thrislington at 7:29 this morning for Arcow. Just curious, why is a train leaving a quarry to go to another quarry? Also why was it cancelled half way through its journey at Milford Jnc.?

Cheers Mike

The S+C was closed today due to snow.

maybe moving wagons/locomotive or testing some sort of clearance en route.

I wonder if it might be a way of moving less-than-trainload consignments from Thrislington to Hunslet, Brindle Heath or Bredbury?

We were looking the other week and got talking about the Peak Forest to Hardendale stone train. However we did find that Hardendale seems to be closed as a quarry but the pulverising equipment is being used on a stone train from 120 miles south. It all makes sense somewhere.

Although the schedule was cancelled at Milford Junction, I think it ended up being diverted into Doncaster Down Decoy sidings.

Empty wagons are often stabled at Thrislington.

Yes, there's a particular set of GBRF box wagons (MJAs) that sometimes stables at Thrislington if not required for several days. The workings for this set generally start empty from Doncaster, but there is limited siding space in the usual GBRF stabling locations at Down Decoy and Hexthorpe.

Although there have been very occasional loaded workings from Thrislington, it's mostly used just to stable the set. See this thread - https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/thrislington.220155/

Recent workings for these MJAs have mainly been Arcow to Ashburys (recessing at Down Decoy before continuing to Ashburys on a different schedule) or Rylstone to Scunthorpe.

There's another set of MJAs based at Doncaster dedicated to the Hull - Ferrybridge gypsum workings
