So I was buying a ticket from the machine at Kings Cross for onwards travel as I already had my ticket for a train to Doncaster. The ticket machine flashed up an error after payment and didn't print anything, but I was still charged. I spoke to gate line staff and they said to go to the ticket office, but as my train was leaving in 5 minutes time I told them that I didn't really have time, so they advised to speak to the train manager. However, since the train was a hull trains service the train manager said that they couldn't really do anything about it.
The ticket was £13 so it isn't a disaster if I have to just write it off but I am obviously quite annoyed about this, so what would you advise me to do in this situation

Sounds like an authorisation has been taken but no payment will be taken. It will take 3 or 4 days for the authorisation to disappear from your account.

When did you eventually arrive? As you were delayed by the operator's error, you ought to be able to claim Delay Repay against the ticket you did eventually buy (although be prepared for the automated system to reject your claim, as no physical trains were late; you can explain it to an agent afterwards).

You wouldn't have seen the charge straight away, as Haywain says it's probably just the authorisation which will dissapear after a couple of days

I see no mention in the OP's post of a delay.

If OP wasn't let on the Hull Trains service, presumably they missed it, and ended up on a later train to Doncaster? This was only an inference, I could be misreading.
The OP said that they already had a ticket for the train to Doncaster and wanted to buy a ticket "for onward travel". I read that to mean onward travel from Doncaster to somewhere else, but they were trying to buy it at King's Cross to save time at Doncaster perhaps.

Then what's that thing about asking the train manager but it being a Hull Trains service?

In the end I spoke to LNER staff at York ticket office as I had half an hour there and they confirmed that it is a pending charge and should disappear after a couple days, but thanks for all of the help

Looks like we’re all done here. Obviously the title turned out to be slightly wrong but the outcome was good.

Thanks everyone.
