Ticket Validity Query - incorrect ‘advice’ from guard?

I recently boarded a Meadowhall-Sheffield service.

I hold a Sheffield-Leeds season ticket. I offered my ticket to scan to the guard, and he scanned it and told me it wasn’t valid from Meadowhall and that a ticket inspector may have an issue with it resulting in a PF.

Can someone clarify this? Surely, I can start short with such a ticket. Also, this ticket is supposed to have unlimited weekend travel included, does a Bank Holiday Monday count as a weekend day?

Can anyone explain what their issue is considering I’ve paid for Sheffield-Leeds and return and I’m just doing Meadowhall-Sheffield and return?

The only restriction on the ticket is ‘not via Doncaster.’

I’m a bit perplexed by this one. I did present a counter argument and they did say they were going to allow it on this occasion, which does strike me as being what someone who knew they were wrong would say…

The guard was wrong. Season tickets allow unlimited travel within their period of validity (on all days - not just weekends) and allow you to break your journey at any intermediate station (which includes starting "late" or finishing "short").

There would be absolutely no grounds for a Penalty Fare to be issued, or any additional fare to be charged, since Meadowhall is obviously on a permitted route from Sheffield to Leeds.

You could submit a complaint to Northern if you're thus inclined, though I doubt it will result in the guard being retrained/rebriefed.

This is what I thought. Thank for the clarification :)
