West Ruislip, my local station, is a combined National Rail and London Underground station. Tickets can be purchased with origins/destinations of West Ruislip OR Zone U1256 London.

The section between West Ruislip and South Ruislip is interavailable, i.e. London Underground tickets can be used on National Rail, and vice versa.

But I've often wanted to know what services can be used beyond South Ruislip.

E.g. if I purchase a ticket from West Ruislip to Cambridge, route '+Any Permitted', intending to use it via Liverpool Street, can I just take the Central Line all the way to Liverpool Street, technically using South Ruislip as my interchange between National Rail and London Underground.

Conversely, if I held a Zone U1256 to Cambridge ticket, can I use it on National Rail services via Marylebone, i.e. where is the interchange between LU and NR permitted to take place?

Both these such tickets would be valid by either operator between West Ruislip and South Ruislip, but what about beyond South Ruislip?

South Ruislip is not listed in the Manual as a valid interchange station for cross-London journeys, so officially this is not permitted.

Until the 25th of September 1999 West Ruislip, South Ruislip, and Greenford were valid stations for starting/ending a cross-London transfer. This is no longer the case. Therefore, unfortunately, a West Ruislip to Cambridge ticket routed "+Any Permitted" must be used on (the somewhat infrequent) National Rail services between one of the Ruislips, and a London Terminal.

Hmm. How about tickets purchased from LUL? I assume these are technically Zone U1256 tickets. Even though some are priced at (roughly, sometimes +/-5p) the West Ruislip price.

Of course the Cambridge - Zone U1256 ticket would be valid to travel by underground to Tottenham Hale, Liverpool Street or Kings Cross etc

I am not sure about tickets purchased from LUL (so-called "Tube-Train fares"), but have found some an extract from The Manual relating to Zone U* fares (so-called "Train-Tube fares"):
Train Tube Zonal Fares

For a point-to-point journey:

· between two National Rail stations where the journey includes the cost of travel on London Underground and/or DLR services, e.g. ‘cross-London’ transfer, or for

· through tickets between a National Rail station and any ‘U’ zone destination or to HEATHROW UNDERGD (note CDR tickets are not available to these destinations: issue Off-Peak Day Travelcard (link)). ‘Train Tube’ tickets for these journeys are issued to show all the Fare Zones travelled in or through from the station of origin. For example, a ticket for a journey between Selhurst (Zone 4) to Holborn (Zone 1) is issued SELHURST to ZONES U1234 LONDN and is valid for transfer to LU services at any interchange station on the line of route, i.e. at Balham, London Victoria, or, via Clapham Junction, at Vauxhall or London Waterloo. Tickets can be reverse issued, i.e. from ZONES U1234.

· ‘Train Tube’ tickets should also be issued for journeys from a designated London Terminals station where either –

a) the destination is an Underground or DLR station, but the first leg of the journey is on an NR service. For example, London Victoria via Balham to Morden (LU) should be issued LONDON TERMINALS to ZONES U1234.

or

b) where the destination is a NR station, but the first leg of the journey is on an LU/ or DLR service. For example, London Euston to Clapham Junction via LU to either Waterloo or Vauxhall. In this example the ticket should be issued ZONES U12 to CLAPHAM JUNCTION.

Whilst Greenford and the Ruislips are no longer listed in The Manual as interchange stations for cross-London purposes, I suspect their omission is an error and that, in reality, you'd have no difficulty changing to/from the Central Line at the relevant stations with such a ticket in the event of encountering an LU RPI.

That's interesting. When I was growing up (and beyond then) in High Wycombe, tickets to London were also available to Paddington via West Ruislip, Greenford and Ealing Broadway. Is that option still available? It's not entirely relevant to the original question but, if the answer is yes, it would make the point that NR tickets are sometimes available on the tube south of South Ruislip.

Actually... thinking as I type... why don't I check the routeing guide? The answer to my question is indeed yes. I notice the direct Paddington is not shown on the relevant map, GC, but I think you'd always be OK under the shortest-route rule for any occasion it mattered.

They are also not listed in the list of interchange stations on NRE's Crossing London page. This list was updated recently as I noticed Canada Water was added.
