Is there an industry standard for how long in advance planned engineering work should be notified to passengers?

I seem to recall reading that things were supposed to be planned a certain number of week in advance.

But TfW appear to think that less than a week's notice of a 2 week full line closure is not worthy of explanation or apology.

Are they being reasonable?

12 weeks. ’Notification’ is in terms of times being available in on line journey planners, and not necessarily publicity.

emergency work that couldn’t be predicted perhaps?

Possibly but if so they're not letting on.

It's just being presented as part of the electrification work.

As for being in journey planners - apparently they should be updated with the changes from Friday...

12 weeks is the standard, however they can be changed at anytime inside that as ‘short notice’ or ‘emergency’ engnieering works.

Does the Core Valley Lines not being Network Rail infrastructure or answerable to the DfT change anything with respect to passenger notification?

Don't know but they still seem to have to jump through hoops to permit interested parties to object whenever they change anything (infrastructure or service patterns).

In any case the services in question here (Coryton to Penarth) are only partly on the Core Valley Lines.

Is there a web site or something that lists planned works? On my local line they piled a decent sized load of brand new concrete sleepers beside the track about three or four years ago and they are still there. Decent sized trees are now growing amongst them!

Theres a publicly accessible section on the NR website that provides a 2 year look ahead, easiest to do a google search for “Network Rail engineering access statement”. (EAS)

This link should also work:

They provide info on routine maintenance and also possessions, it’s the section 7s that include the significant stuff. But it is just the long term plan, as things get closer at about 6 months out IIRC, they are copied to a confirmed period possession plan which isn’t online, and the EAS becomes less accurate.
