Journey 2: GLASGOW CENTRAL to LONDON EUSTON
Ticket Type: ADVANCE SINGLE
Route: This ticket is only valid when travelling exclusively on Virgin Trains.
Outward Journey: 17/04/2010
departs GLASGOW CENTRAL at 14:25 travel by Train service provider VIRGIN TRAINS to station LONDON EUSTON arrives 20:17

I am going to be on the above service tomorrow, and I was wandering why it would take about 6 hours to get back to London, when the journey takes only 4hrs 30mins. I checked Virgin's site and I notice there are some engineering works taking place tomorrow.

The thing is, the service is not mentioned in the timetables on Virgin's website. (Link below).

Does the above train actually run :D?

eastcoast website says it does. Train may be delayed due to engineering works. However, NR have said that they will cancel engineering works this weekend where possible

According to the FGW website (my choice) that train does take nearly 6 hrs, but with no changes. Most of the other services to Euston require changes - some requiring 3 !
The 1445 has 3 changes and takes 18 mins longer than yours - so don't complain !
It looks like that there are engineering works that your train will take some devious route to avoid whilst still providing a direct service.

If you look at a Sat in a couple of weeks time there are plenty of direct services again taking around 4hrs 30.

Major route improvements between Carlisle and Lockerbie
Routes:

London - The North West - Glasgow
Birmingham - The North West & Scotland
Date: Saturday 17 April

What is happening?

Until 1330hrs approximately, services will run as booked with the exception of the 0605 London Euston to Glasgow Central service, which will terminate at Carlisle. From 1330hrs onwards, services from London Euston will terminate at Carlisle; services from Birmingham New Street will be diverted via Dumfries, extending overall journey times by up to 75 minutes approximately. Passengers travelling on services from London Euston should change at Carlisle, onto the Birmingham New Street to Glasgow Central services. Glasgow Central to London Euston services and some Glasgow Central to Birmingham New Street services will depart up to 75 minutes earlier than booked and be diverted via Dumfries. The remaining Glasgow Central to Birmingham New Street services will start from Carlisle.

Alternative route:

A Rail Replacement Coach will operate in both directions between Carlisle and Edinburgh Waverley.

Additional service;
1825 Glasgow Central to Crewe – calling at Carlisle, Penrith, Oxenholme, Lancaster, Preston, Warrington Bank Quay and Crewe.

Advice:

Please allow an extra 75 minutes approximately for your journey.

My bold. It's what is in the timetable as the 1540 I think. take a wild guess that it'll be Voyager(s) rather than Pendolino, unless they're dragging via Dumfries

I appreciated it was going by Dumfries- just guessing as to the stock! Pendolinos without a loco won't get very far trying to go via Dumfries, but it would normally be a Pendo service. Revised timetable doesn't seem to indicate what sort of train is being used.

Wouldn't the 21 minute long booked stop at Carlisle indicate a locomotive being detached?

Or at the very least timing provision to do that...
