AIUI they need to run them over the route for drivers learning the mk5s so it presumably served a purpose even without passengers onboard.

Lancashire Day Ranger you can do Liverpool to Manchester. North West one that allows Liverpool to Leeds is a 7 day.

I'd also be interested, as I'll be travelling from York to Manchester and back tomorrow, but feel it's far too early to second guess at the moment, especially with the way TPE are these days. From what I've seen, Saturdays appear to be the most dodgy day, too!
