Please bear in mind I am a novice here at using RTT, so possibly asking the wrong question!

I have a couple of save searches as favourites on my phone, both are basically passing Hullavington, all services and about now. One is WTT order, and having been caught out by this a few times now mostly use actual order.

This is used to say to the little people in my house, if you come and walk the dog there are xyz freight trains coming, I wonder what the are, we can count the trucks etc

This works out pretty well no complaints!

A few time recently there have been “extra” trains which don’t tie up to anything on RTT, we’ve heard and seen these and they are always “freight” a mixture of actuall freight and engineers, am I doing something wrong on my searches or do some trains just not appear?

The usual reason for what you describe is a train being diverted 'off route' at the last minute
due to some problem such as a points/signal failure on its booked route. When that happens,
there will of course be no 'booked' timings for the train(s) in question on the diversionary route,
so it won't appear in a location search on RTT.

Have you seen any of these 'phantom' trains within the past seven days?
If so, post the time/direction/date and I'll have a look to see if I can find
out what it was...

Thanks Mark, makes sense. I think the last one I noticed was Monday or Tuesday around 7am, but don’t waste time looking now as all the days blur into one! I’ll ping you again when I next notice it if that’s ok, which probably won’t be for a couple of weeks as the line seems to be closed....!

Some very short notice train pathways movements often don't make it into rtt. A 'VSTP' - very short term plan may appear after a train movement has commenced. It's usually when there is some major disruption and stock is pressed into service to run a special service, i.e a xZxx head code at short notice. Probably applies to passenger and empty passenger more than freight and boxes.
