This looks as if it could have been much nastier than it was. Not far from the driver...

"A train punctured by a fallen tree has caused delays and cancellations to rail services between Glasgow and Oban.
The 05:20 ScotRail service from Glasgow Queen Street hit the tree between Arrochar and Ardlui in Argyll.
Images showed the train had sustained puncture damage near the driver's cab. Engineers were dispatched to cut away the remaining logs.
ScotRail said the train would be taken away for further inspection. The line reopened at about 12:20 GMT."

Interesting that we have journalists that are totally road vehicle oriented.
Punctures
Bit like train drivers 'seeking alternative route' (presumably on their sat-nav :lol:)

Yes, although the damage does resemble a puncture in that a hole has been punched through the skin of the cab.

I recall something similar happening to a 158 a number of years ago (I'm sure it was still First running Scotrail) between Inverness and Wick. It caused an awful lot of damage, trees can be quite dangerous especially if you run into them at speed!

This looks quite trivial
The glass fibre has done its job and absorbed the impact, the underlying steelwork looks undamaged except maybe a scratch on the corridor connector.

You need to think of the wider definition of “puncture”, not just about tyres.

The tree has punctured the skin of the train. So a totally correct use of language.

Potentially you're thinking of this?

Indeed so, but if it had hit the cab window...? Obviously there can always be 'what ifs' but it was a close thing.

And this would be a perfect time to ask some of the 'what ifs', so that measures can be taken before they become a 'remember when'.
