Trip planning and break of journey

I'm looking into options for a colleague who is not from the UK.
Journey would be

Newcastle Airport 1 June flight arrival 1730 to Durham
Durham to Newcastle Airport for flight departure 0930 on 3 June.

So looking at journey planner it seems a ticket is avalable and as such must cover the Metro and train.
Lots of choice after arrival.
Departure options only start at 0641.

So this raises the possibility of staying in Newcastle on night of 2 June to derisk that departure and I would naturally go for an off-peak return but the tickets offered seem to be off-peak day single and anytime day single. Is this another insidious reach of LNER policy?
So to my question. Can you do an overnight break of journey with an anytime day single?

No.
Except, possibly, if unable to complete the journey on the first day. But this only in certain circumstance, if at all.
See https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ticket-types/tickets/sds/
Anytime Day Single tickets are valid for travel on the date shown on the ticket and until 04:29 the following morning.
Generally local tickets around major centres are only offered and valid for one day, to prevent their reuse on later days. It’s the same for me Wilmslow-Manchester, probably nothing to do with LNER’s ticket policy.

I think I was misled by or misinterpreted the text I read here in which case the off-peak return would be no different..

Where Break of Journey is available on your specific journey, if you wish to stop overnight or it is not possible to complete the journey by 0230 on the day following the last day of validity, you may continue your journey the following morning. Travel must resume before 1200, where the time restrictions that apply to the ticket should be observed and no further break of journey is allowed except to change trains.

[Edit-] I see what I missed, break of journey is allowed on the return.
Pity that this does not seem to be something the website I tried will offer to sell (an off-peak return)

There is no offpeak (period) return fare.
It is no longer LNER policy to offer these anywhere, but I doubt they were offered for this particular journey short even previously.
