Right haven't actually uploaded a trip report here for a good few years now.

Today I had to pick up a van from BCA auctions in Manchester which my brother had bought. To try and beet traffic back down the M6 and M4 at Newport I.opted to get a very early train to Manchester.

Nice cheap fare on the 0603 from Pyle to Manchester piccadilly. Left my parents in laws house at 0540 , my wife and daughter still fast asleep. Ended up getting soaked by the heavy rain as I walked to the station.

Just missed the Cwmbargoed freight going through. Quite a few people waiting for the 0603 Manchester service and 7 waiting for the Milford haven service.

150241 arrives promptly at 0601. 0603 we left ontime . Nice trip. Approaching Cardiff Central nosing at all the 150s sat with the class 08 at pulman rail depot. We started making our way across the throat into platform 3. I groaned seeing this as last time I seen this tfw cancelled the train at Cardiff Central.

Luckily train Crew waiting for us. While we were waiting we could see and hear some class 153s on platform 4 having some issues trying to pull off you could here the brakes screeching as the unit eventually pulled away towards canton.

The 0640 Nottingham train departs at this time and passengers wondering whats going on. 0652 we find out there's a broken down train blocking the signals at the east end of platform 3 and 4.

0705 doors close and we hear engines start accelerating except we are heading westbound back towards Bridgend and Swansea. This really caused confusion. Just as we got to brickyard and train stopped. Driver walked through the train to change end then we proceeded back into Cardiff Central via platform 1. Picked up more passengers then.deparyed at 0705. At Hereford I had a email from the trainline saying my service was cancelled. Spoke to the guard as he made his way through the train. He hadn't been told anything but went to try and find some information for us.

As we approached Shrewsbury we could see every platform was occupied with trains. We pulled into platform 5 . Heard announcements telling passengers heading towards Wrexham that there was a bus waiting outside. The relief guard scene over the PA telling us the service was terminating at Crewe abd that we should catch the 1014 avanti service to Manchester piccadilly. We departed Shrewsbury back towards Hereford stopping just outside the station. After we'd stopped a class 158 passed us heading into the station I assumed coming off the Cambrian line.

We then proceeded non stop through Shrewsbury station on the through line finally arriving into Crewe platform 5 at 1001. Loads of passengers on the platform tried to then board thinking it was the 1010 to Carmarthen. We all made our way to platform 6 then over the station Pa they announced a platform change the 1010 Carmarthen train was coming into platform 6 while the 1014 avanti service was held outside the station. After the Carmarthen train departed calling additionally at the local stations between Crewe and Shrewsbury the avanti service pulled in. Boarded it with a quick trip arriving into Manchester piccadilly at 1055.

That must have felt bizarre going through Shrewsbury non-stop! Quite the long journey all in, but certainly significantly different to the usual sort of journey!

At least I got beyond Cardiff Central. Last 2 times I've caught it ots been put into platform 3 at Cardiff and cancelled.

One day I'll do it and get a nice mk4 rake

I often notice at Shrewsbury that the platforms are empty for about 20 minutes then all of a sudden all of the platforms fill up to the extent that the other week a 153 off the heart of Wales had to park up Infront of a 196 on platform 6, however the 153 arrived 5 minutes before the 196 departure so as soon as the 153 came to a stand the TFW 158 on platform 5 left towards the cambrian and the 153 shunted in there and the 196 departed, quite a nightmare for the 153 driver who said he was in a hurry for his train home!
