Was sat down having a drink with a mate last night, and we created an idea to do an alphabet challenge on the trains. Basically, the idea was to travel to a station from A-Z, in a day - to see if it's possible.
Quickly, we realised it wouldn't be and certain letters weren't possible - so we reduced it down to 20 different letters, so the six most awkward can be missed out, but the challenge working out which six.
We threw some rules together quickly:
1. Start on "A", finish on your last alphabetical letter, be it "W", "Y", etc. The rest can be in any order, and in any part of England, Wales and Scotland.
2. National Rail Stations only count - so no counting tram stations, underground, etc. They can be utilised as a mode of transport if desired.
3. Standard English spelling of stations only, and names as published
4. Any 24 hour period counts, ie could be 23:43-23:42 or 11:36-11:35, whichever works
5. For a station to count, you must be scheduled to stop (or at least request stop), but do not have to necessarily disembark
6. Ignore fare cost for this "challenge" (for now anyway)
7. Minimum interchange times apply, particularly important if utilising other modes of transport such as Underground.
8. Must be 20 different lettered stations - you can repeat letters, but they don't count as part of the 20.
9. Optimum result would be time, but distance and interest of route could be good to see as well.
Completely a bit of fun - although we did say between us we might do our run one day to see what it works out like.
Would be fascinated to see what people come up with, so happy for people to share ideas if they are prepared and willing to do so!
