You know the drill.

How many of Britain’s seaside towns/cities*, on end-of-the-line** stations, are still one direct train away from the capital?

Considering the synonymity of the British seaside and the railways, historically, I think it would be intriguing to see how today’s railway compares - and definitely since Covid and the resulting ‘Staycation’ phase.

I’ll say that any train in the last 12 months counts towards a ‘still happening’ claim, and that charters/weekend specials/one-off services count too - as they are all fairly within the criteria, and offer a deeper insight into the synonymity mentioned above.

*seaside, as in truly costal and ‘on the sea’, and not situated on an estuary, loch, river mouth or bayou, if possible.

**end-of-the-line, as in a terminus by definition, or as a terminus by the vast majority of services arriving at the station.

The list, so far:
  1. Brighton (Blackfriars/Bridge/St Pancras Int’l/Victoria)
  2. Bognor Regis (Victoria)

Bognor Regis; Littlehampton; Eastbourne (definitely a terminus but maybe not majority of services terminating).
Weymouth; Portsmouth Harbour.

Possibly could count Llandudno (albeit only Junction).

Margate (High Speed services via Canterbury terminate there)
Nice suggestion. I’ve looked it up and while being true, I feel as though Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Dover Priory could also qualify, all of which aren’t technically termini stations - just termini for the high speed trains.

I’ll add them into a section anyway, but they’ll be asterisked!

Bognor Regis; Littlehampton; Eastbourne (definitely a terminus but maybe not majority of services terminating).
Weymouth; Portsmouth Harbour.
Eastbourne is all buffer stops, so definitely qualifies as a terminus here.

Would Portsmouth & Southsea also count?

Blackpool North
Penzance
Newquay in summer months
Assuming Newquay would be direct from Paddington?

Scarborough? Pre covid it had the EMR service, but also gets quite a few tours and charters, so has there been any in the last 12 months to London

Is King's Lynn acceptable?
Ah, it’s an honourable mention!

Although the water at some point in the day, in some part of of the town, probably tastes salty, I don’t think it qualifies cleanly enough!

I think there's more terminating trains than not at Plymouth.
Absolutely.

Plymouth is physically not a terminus, yet has terminating trains from the west, the east, London and also Scotland.. which by the second criteria, makes it valid.

Bournemouth/King’s Lynn/Sunderland haven’t quite made the ‘clean’ answer list unfortunately.

Respectfully, they just don’t qualify by the original criteria by either not being physically end-of-the-line, have the vast majority of services terminate there or by being ‘seaside’ enough.

They make the ‘Honourable Mentions List’ however!
