Two double ended 73stock units are taken out of service before the start of the leaf fall season. Each middle car interior is adapted to fit Sandite tanks and pumps into the passenger space. Plumbing from the pumps takes the Sandite gel down to the railhead on each side of the car. It acts as a friction improver with varying degrees of success.

The RAT’s are operated by a small cadre of Test Train crews who do refresher training before the start of leaf fall. The RAT’s are returned to normal use after the leaf fall season ends and the Sandite equipment goes back into store.

Just to clarify for those that might be wondering:- most 3 car 73stock units have a drivers cab at one end and a simple shunting control at the other end. Two of these single ended units are coupled together to form a 6 car train.

A small number of 3 car 73stock units have a drivers cab at both ends. These units can be used solo or coupled to the shunting cabinet end of a single cab unit to make a 6 car train. You can also use two double end units to make a 6 car train.

The use of two double ended united in passenger service is extremely rare. Infact, I cannot remember the last time this was done in service due to the long gap between doors in the middle. On the other hand, the 67ts on the Victoria line had two put together.

It has to be said, that’s a very slick operation!
