Hello!

I have a trip in mind where I'll travel from Kings Cross to Edinburgh with a twist - I'd like to get a Grand Central Class 180 to Sunderland then hop across to Newcastle on the metro, before continuing northwards.

I have wrangled the ticket system into offering me a fare for this journey, but I don't have certainty on whether my ticket will cover me for the Metro trip from Sunderland to Newcastle. I see there is a Northern service, but being a nerd I'd quite like to get the Metro.

Can anyone advise whether my ticket will be valid? I've seen another thread with confusion on this matter and the Nexus site (who appear to run the metro) didn't make it obvious.

Worst case I'll phone up the ticket office later in the week.

It's valid. Anything valid between Newcastle and Sunderland on National Rail services (excluding AP tickets for Northern only, obviously) is also valid on Metro for such a journey. I had a protracted argument with them about this a few months ago on Twitter and they did finally accept that my Gatwick to Newcastle ticket was valid.

Staff on the ground at Central should accept it and will be used to seeing National Rail tickets. You might need to explain you've come from Sunderland but it's unlikely a conversation will go beyond that. Just make sure that you travel only from Sunderland to Central.

Naturally, even better if you can produce an itinerary for your journey.

Send me a PM if you have any issues - I still have contacts there.

Thank you very much for your reply - that's great to know!

I'll show my ticket and say I've just come off at Sunderland to carry on to Newcastle and hope the staff understand. It's great it's included in the price!

If there's any issues I guess I can buy a ticket for the Metro and thrash it out afterwards, I'm not good with in person confrontations! I'll keep you updated!
