Not so long ago I and some people I was with had some time to kill while we were in sheffield and were in possession of a plusbus ticket, so we decided to go for a walk paralell to the tramway before catching a tram back when we ran out of time.

We walked along the path following the tramway into park square, at this point the path stopped following the tramway. At this point there was no longer a path next to the tramway, so we followed the path through park square and out onto broad street and Criket inn road up to the tram stop of the same name.

This is where stuff got weird, according to google maps there was a track parallel to the tramway leading up to a footbridge across the A road. The footbridge was clearly visible, but there did not appear to be any track leading up to it. There weren't any "no entry" signs either though and there seemed to be plenty of space beside the tramway, so we walked up to and across the bridge. After crossing the bridge though the space between tramway and foilage seemed to be getting dangerously narrow, so we turned back.

Abyone know what is going on? is there supposed to be a footpath there? if so why is it so indistinct? if not why is it on google maps and why is there a footbridge?

No - it's a safe walking route for maintenance. The pedestrian route is along Cricket Inn Road, left at the roundabout onto Woodbourn Road, left on the depot drive access, and then along the trackside footpath to the tram stop.
As for why it's shown as a footpath on Google Maps...I'll need my crystal ball.

Needs to be reported to Google as you’re right that it isn’t a safe walking route. @TC60054 has illustrated the correct route between the two stops (and onwards to Woodbourn Road).
