Were there ever any Norwood Junction to Selhurst direct services?

I pass through Norwood nearly every day now and I've always wondered if there were ever any services that actually left there and went to Selhurst through the depot before the extra sidings were built?

Obviously not possible now but would open up some interesting loop(ish) services

There were quite a few 'circular' services that looped round from London Bridge and Victoria via Selhurst/Norwood Junction back in the 1970s. I remember travelling on them.

IIRC they stopped when Windmill Bridge Junction and associated lines were re-modelled in the early 1980s. No doubt others can confirm or correct.

Yes, remember them well and travelled on them regularly. London Bridge to London Bridge via Peckham Rye, Tulse Hill, Streatham Common, Selhurst, Norwood Jct, New Cross Gate and vv was 30 minute frequency all day and into the late evening, at least until the late 1960s. However, outside of the rush hour I do not recall them being particularly well used.

Not quite what the OP was looking for but on 21st September 1980 an open day was held at Selhurst Depot during which a shuttle service, operated by at least one Thumper, ran between Norwood Junction station and a specially constructed platform within the depot confines.

The routing varied over the years and IIRC the final version was Tulse Hill-Crystal Palace - Selhurst (abbreviation TCS/SCT), combining two lightly loaded routes. The route was NOT through the depot but around the southern edge.

This map should help but a full track plan of the old layout would be even better....

There are some SN peak trains that go London bridge/Victoria to selhurst, ecs via the arrivals departure line. Then form a norwood- London service.

Didn't one of the buffer puffers go around via the depot.

Before the junction was remodelled there were lines that went around the outside of the depot from one side to the other so the circular services wouldn't have needed to pass through it. Google world will give you a good view of the old bridges where the west Croydon lines to Norwood Jnct used to join/cross over the lines from Selhurst.

Gloucester Road had an very complex and very busy layout all controlled from a miniature lever frame. Didn't last all that long in the end. See also:

Or, https://www.londonreconnections.com/2014/study-sussex-part-7-east-croydon/, for the London Reconnections take on things for the future with a rather useful Diagram of how things were in the past.

I used to live at Tulse Hill and in 1968/69 I went out with a girl in Norbury. There used to be a loop service on Sundays that went London Bridge - Tulse Hill - Streatham - Streatham Common - Selhurst - Norwood Junction - Crystal Palace - West Norwood - Tulse Hill and back to London Bridge again. I can't remember if there was a vice-versa service or whether it just went one way round. It can't have been heavily used because the usual provision was a 2-EPB. I can't remember the headcode. I can't see one on the SEMG list.

See post #5, though I was thinking weekdays in the mid 70s and had forgotten the Sunday version. The "original" route to Crystal Palace Low Level from Sydenham lost its Sunday service as a result.

It went both ways round, for obvious reasons.
