Does anyone know of a list of the motive power used on the WHL, particularly the Fort William extension, during the steam era? I'm particularly interested in 1923 to the end of steam services. I'm not bothered for exact numbers, just classes that were regularly used.

Thanks! :D

Lots of ex ER/LNER stuff in the LNER and early BR days before the Black 5s took over.
So classes K1 (I think?), K1/1, K2, K4 and B1. I think Fort William had some J36s for pilot/local trip work etc as well.

There’s a nice bit about the Mallaig extension here:

Don't forget the Glens (Railway Roundabout also did Two Glens to Ft Wm...)

1950 allocation to Fort William shed :

K2 :
61782 Loch Eil
61783 Loch Sheil
61787 Loch Quoich
61788 Loch Rannoch
61789 Loch Laidon
61790 Loch Lomond
61791 Loch Laggan
K4:
61995 Cameron of Lochiel
61996 Lord of the Isles
J36 :
65237
65300
65313

The Fort William locos were principal power on the Mallaig extension, and shared the Glasgow service. The other named K2 and K4 were allocated to Eastfield, and commonly worked the line from the other end.

This page gives a description of the K4, which was particularly associated with the line, plus asides on the others :

Looking through the RCTS History series about LNER locos, before arrival of the NBR "Glen" (LNER D34) 4-4-0s, earlier NBR 4-4-0s (LNER Classes D28, D32, D33 & D35) had spent time on the West Highland. The Glens were built in batches between 1913 & 1925.

In later years, the two Gresley V4 2-6-2s also spent some time here (after 1943 ) - they appear to have been not the best examples of Gresley locos, and after Gresley died, Thompson preferred to build his own B1 4-6-0s.
