I noticed my off peak £1.60 ticket was £1.80 today on Northern.

Is it only regulated fares that go up in January and the TOCs decide when then unregulated ones go up, and they have decided to do it differently this year?

No, all fares can only change at three change dates in the year. These occur in January, May, and September. The next change is on Saturday 2nd January.

If you purchased your ticket today for travel on or after that date then that would be the reason for increase.

I just had a look at a ticket for the same journey last week and it was £1.80 also. Just goes to show how much attention I usually pay . I could have sworn it was £1.60.

As most fares are going down, including unregulated ones in many cases (or at least remaining the same), I'm in a fairly unique situation where I need to renew my season ticket in 2010, yet I'll have to renew it before 2011 because next year it will almost certainly increase like it usually does.

So, the saving of £4 (yes, four quid!) will be wiped out by the fact that I'd be stupid to renew on the 2nd Jan 2011 when it could well go up by significantly more!
