Hoped to do the Werrington dive-under today, riding train 2K16, the 13:21 from Peterborough to Lincoln, as listed on the PSUL website. But it went via the "original" surface route!

Was this just a one-off, or does the 13:21 no longer use the dive-under? Does the dive-under show up on OTT or RTT?

As far as I know it’s only the 17:10 thru the dive under from Peterborough.
When RTT lists “Marholm Junction” then that is the pointer.

EMR replatformed a couple of months back and no longer required the diver under. PSUL needs an update.

If your Lincoln service goes from platform six or seven, you’ll use the dive under (Marholm Junction). Platform One or Two you’ll continue via Werrington Junction.

Platform Three isn’t bi-directional (Up Fast). Four and five would be rare, but I believe signalling wise is possible - four being the main platform for down intercity services, and five being the March Independent.

A detailed search on RTT will show the (2 departures, 3 arrivals) timetabled for Platform 7 and the dive under. The 13:21 departure isn't one of those.

Some of the forthcoming LNER Joint Line weekend diversions in October are scheduled to use it.

Does this fairly minimal sounding use mean it was actually a huge waste of money or am I missing something?

It’s mainly intended for freight. The ‘Joint Line’ passenger services via Spalding generally start/ terminate at Peterborough and operate in both directions via the reversible Up Slow. (Other detailed routes are available.) Sometimes through ECML passenger diversions can exploit the diveunder too.

Worth its weight in gold for the amount of freight coming from/to the March direction which no longer has to cross the mainlines.

"It’s mainly intended for freight."

Of course. I should have checked that, I was only thinking of regular passenger services.

Looks like during Mon-Fri, the booked services to/from platform 7 via Spalding, Sleaford, etc:

0637 2T51 Newark NG to Peterborough
0837 2K08 Peterborough to Newark NG
1455 2K17 Doncaster to Peterborough
1710 2K24 Peterborough to Lincoln

There’s also an evening service that terminates that then goes on to form a Nottingham via Leicester all stations service. I believe this is booked Platform 7 having come off of the Joint Line.

It is of course always variable as to what is happening on the day too, for whatever reason the signallers may choose not to use the dive under.

The morning train pair from/to Lincoln is fairly reliable, but not guaranteed.
