Hi All,

I have recently moved on the EMR rail route and have to travel to London frequently. Can anyone please help me with which Rail Card should I buy? Mostly I travel alone, but at times my wife and son travel with me too.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Cheers

I think we need your age for best advice. You could easily be limited to a family railcard by age and location, which would be no good for travel on your own…

The Network Railcard will cover the section between Bedford and London, otherwise you need to be disabled or a veteran.

The only railcard that can help you is the Network Railcard but this is limited in scope as it only covers the area to Bedford. To gain any advantage you would need to travel on trains that call at Bedford and these are typically only the services from Corby, requiring a change of trains at Kettering which in turn limits which trains you could use from Leicester. In the event that you hold a season ticket non-stop splits are an option which means all trains could be used. Overall, I suspect that you are not going to do much better than using a Family & Friends Railcard when you are travelling with your wife and son.

About how many times a month do you travel to London on your own?
I have to travel 8 days a month to London…

An 8 days in 28 days Flexi Season ticket is available from Leicester to/from London Terminals (= St. Pancras?) at £856.10.

An 8 days in 28 days Flexi Season ticket is also available from Leicester to/from London Thameslink (route Not Underground) so would be valid, with a change, into a few more Central London stations, but that's £884.70.

Travel from Leicester into Central London's not cheap!

For work it is mostly on weekdays 8 days a month. But once or twice a month travel on weekends as well with family.
You would save money on your trips with the family with a friends and family railcard.

Well, not at peak times anyway! At Off-Peak times it can be much less and a split at Kettering or elsewhere can reduce the price significantly.

Driving to Nuneaton or Rugby and taking LNR can reduce the fare, too. But obviously not as attractive an option when there are 4 fast trains an hour from Leicester taking only an hour or so.
