As the title says, this has been a bit of a mystery to me. I haven't been able to find any explanation online, so why was this "rump" of a service retained after everything else had closed?

IIRC, there were problems licensing the replacement bus service. Open to correction though if I'm mistaken.
Lengthy thread from last year must have something on the topic, but I'd use the search facility
