My GG grandfather, William Anwell (1819-1881) was employed by the London and South West Railway company for over forty years. He became principal foreman of the locomotive department at Nine Elms station in London in 1857 and was there until his death in 1881. Throughout his career he was loved and respected by the men who worked for him and when he died many of them attended his funeral and raised money for a memorial to him. In their March 3 1882 edition the newspaper “The Railway Review” reported that at a staff meeting photographs of him were being sold.
I wonder whether any such photo might exixst or whether anyone has any information about him.

@simcarr26. Welcome to the forum. He (William Anwell) was reported in the local press as having been in his 63rd year, when he died, on or around 8th December 1881. Had apparently worked for the railway for some 41 years, before retiring from the London & South Western Railway sometime in April 1880. When he died, his address was given as Percy Villa, Belleville Road, Wandsworth Common. Was a locomotive superintendent / chief inspector of the drivers / firemen whilst at the Nine Elms depot with the L&SWR. As you say, he was said to have been much respected.
