Hi,I take my son to watch the freight trains at Worksop and he wanted to know where they go from there and when they run as we can here them through the night from home.
I'm new to this so thought this would be the best place to ask as I couldn't find him any maps or info on the net.
Thanks in advance for any answers.

Hello.

Broadly speaking, most of the freight around the Worksop is destined for Coal Power Stations such as Drax, Eggborough, Cottam, Ratcliffe, Ferrybridge etc.

A lot comes from the docks at Immingham.

As mentioned West Burton and Cottam are the start and finish points for much of the freight through Worksop station...running to / from a multitude of places across the UK. The material includes coal, gypsum, limestone in (with empty wagons going out).

The coal traffic from Immingham is usually going to either of the two Trent Valley power stations, but has to go into Worksop yard to run round the train. There is also a booked working from Felixstowe - Doncaster of containers.

Traffic to / from the Aire Vally power stations such as Drax etc does not usually come through Worksop.

There are many workings scheduled through the day and night, but may be subject to cancellation

Opentraintimes.com may be of assistance, click the spanner icon at the top and it will show you freight workings.

You could try the Rail Atlas of Great Britain & Ireland by S.K.Baker. http://goo.gl/dYJ7C

Another map book of the rail network is TRACKatlas of mainland Britain. http://goo.gl/TMabx

Both publications will show all the railway lines, but won't be able to specify the routes taken by respective trains.

Another option is to go to Realtime Trains, click on 'Advanced' and type in Worksop in the 'Location' box, and in the 'What Time' box select in the drop down box 0600-2000 and then press 'search'

This will give you a run down of all the 'paths' during normal daylight hours both passenger and freight. Please note these are all book paths, and does not necessarily mean they are all running that day.

To find out which are running go to the 'ID' column and click on the 4 digit head code. With a bit of practice you will be able to see if a train is running or not.
FRGT mean freight. Once clicked the 'Realtime' column will show in 'Dly' at the originating location if it is running late or early, this will progress down the list as the train is logged past each location. If nothing there chances are it is not running.

If all that sound like hard work. :)
Hope that Mark from Freightmaster.net comes on (which he does regularly) and he often very generously provides all the freight info for any particular site.

I have just seen that the Nottingham to Worksop line is featured in the latest issue of Rail Express, that may also be of interest to you and your son.
