Hi all,

I am travelling up to York from Worthing with my partner and on our return journey would like to visit a friend in Nottingham. I was wondering, could we use the return portion to go via Nottingham? The fare is the Super off-peak return £169.40 for the both of us.

I have found on NRE some journeys that allow it with the Super-off peak return, but they are not the exact journeys I want to make. Given there are some journeys allowed on NRE with this routeing, does this mean it is a valid route for me to take?

Here is an example I found on NRE: http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/servi...orrow/1000/dep/070816/1215/dep?via=Nottingham

Thanks in advance for your help!

In general if NRE shows a route as being valid for a particular ticket, then that indicates that the route is permitted and you may use any trains on that route (be aware though that off peak ticket restrictions may be different for different routes).

Via Nottingham is a mapped route so is permitted for this ticket. Note that the mapped routes do not allow you to do Nottingham-Grantham-York, although I very much doubt that you'd have an issue doing this as it's probably the route you'd be sent on if you asked advice at Nottingham! The alternative (mapped) routes are via Sheffield, or you could do Nottingham-Worksop-Retford-York but this would be slow.

Be aware of the differing time restrictions for travel from St Pancras vs KX:
Restriction 9D (redacted) said:
Not valid to depart:
LONDON TERMINALS: (except as
shown below) after 02:59 and
before 09:06 and after 14:59
and before 18:59 (18:15 on
Fridays);

LONDON ST PANCRAS
INTERNATIONAL after 04:29 and
before 10:26 and after 15:15
and before 18:59;

The quickest journey time between York and Nottingham is usually via Sheffield. There is only about one train every 2 hours from York which calls at Grantham and connections are not always that good which usually makes changing at Sheffield or Chesterfield quicker and easier.

Yes, we already have a two together railcard. The route via Sheffield is my favourite as I have done the journey a few times before. Thanks everyone for your help!

Definitely via Sheffield rather than Worksop / Retford. I have to use Worjsop for stuff as I live just outside, non of the connections line up with anything else and trains that call at Retford on the ECML seem to be getting more sparse everytime I look.
I assume you'll be going up from king's cross on the outbound.
