Let's say I want to travel from Cambridge to Tottenham Hale. As I need to be there at a specific time in the morning, I buy an advanced ticket. However, on this particular day, a ticket to Liverpool Street is actually cheaper than to Tottenham Hale (obviously travelling and stopping at Tottenham Hale). The train arrives Tottenham Hale at 9:18, and almost certainly the gates wouldn't open, as I'm of course not allowed to stop short on an advanced ticket.

However, I will also have an off-peak Z1-6 day travelcard between Cambridge and London (GA only). On this route the train is considered peak if it arrives in London after 10am - which is why I need an additional advanced ticket for the morning outbound journey. However, can I in theory just wait for 12 minutes at the platforms, and then exit the station using my off-peak travelcard?

If there is a revenue block you might be questioned, but I would expect the barriers themselves to work as you are not obliged to use the CBG leg of your travelcard. Do you have time to go through to LST and come back/switch to tube?

You may possibly have answered your own question. What @30907 suggests, in the latter part of his post, may be the safest option available to you.
