X and M - payment method codes on tickets

What do the X and M mean next to the ticket price? Is it something to do with buying on the train or ticket office or ticket machine.
I know the W means Warrent.

Payment methods. X=Card, M=Cash (or as far as I've been told!).

Where the ticket comes from has no relevance whatsoever.

and Q is cheque, not that you'll see that very often apart from corporate scheme season tickets.
