yes i shouldve thought about this before yes i was fueled by teenage bravado and stupidity no i dont want to go to jail and have a criminal record

what ticket did you have? If it was a digital ticket (e.g. Trainline) and it was scanned by the ticket inspector, then the railway company will now have access to your Trainline account and other online ticket accounts. So it probably won’t be too difficult to find you.

If you weren't asked for your name and address then you probably won't hear any more. It sounds as if the ticket inspector gave you the benefit of the doubt and you were lucky.
However you need to take this as a warning. If you continue to fare dodge and defraud the railway, you will get caught at some point and then you will have to pay a hefty fine and maybe get a criminal record.

trust me i've learnt my lesson - this and my dad talking to me were a real wake up call. its all really cheesy and feels fake to say but i'm never doing this again.

if they took a photo of your ticket, or if they took a note of ticket details (booking ref / ticket number etc.) then they will be able to reconcile it back to your online booking account.

@shush. Welcome to the forum. Presumably the online booking system that you used will have your correct name and address linked to it when it was set up? Also, was this a one-off occasion when you've been purchasing/using inappropriately discounted tickets, or have there been other times? If you've booked same online, there's a fair chance that the train company's investigation team will be able to straightforwardly determine this by inspecting your ticket purchasing history.

The only way to completely guarantee they cant find you would have been to pay by cash for a ticket, even then there is probably ways they could theoretically track you down using cctv etc

Paying by card even at the ticket office or tvm is traceable, whether a rail company decides it is worth the hassle to go down that route and get police involved to be able to do so is a different matter

First, you don't go to jail for an offence like this.
Second, as no-one has taken any details it is extremely unlikely that you will hear any more about this.
