Chiltern Railway offers free weekend travel on the network on purchase of an annual season ticket worth more than £1500.

The cost of zone 2-6 annual travelcard increased over the years and now costs more than £1500.

However, Chiltern Railway has no stations in zone 2 and the only zone 6 stations it stops at (West Ruislip) is not managed by Chiltern Railways.

Could somebody please confirm that the only way to get the free weekend travel within the TfL travel zones is to go to Marylebone or Northolt Park and buy a travelcard for zone 1-4 / zone 1-5 / zone 1-6?

The Chiltern ticket office at Marylebone issued me an annual Zone 2-6 Travelcard on my oyster card last December which I use regularly for free weekend travel to Birmingham.

I'm confused.

A Zone 2-6 Travelcard is valid on Chiltern between West Ruislip & Wembley Stadium and at all intermediate stations.

So why would such a ticket not qualify?

I can't see a rule that says all travel must be on Chiltern?

I think he means you have to buy the ticket from a station owned/managed by Chiltern?

Edit: From the Chiltern website:

"3. Special Benefits

Free weekend travel on all routes

When you buy a monthly or longer season ticket or Travelcard season ticket, originating from a Chiltern Railways station, valid on our services, and worth £150 or more a month (or £1,500 or more a year), you get FREE travel at weekends and on Bank Holidays across our entire network (except for the Bicester Village Shuttle Bus). You must buy your ticket from Chiltern Railways to receive this benefit. If your Season Ticket is on an Oyster card you must also have your paper record card to travel free at weekends and Bank Holidays. This offer does not apply on Christmas Day and Boxing Day."

The rule is that the origin station must be a Chiltern Railways station, so outboundary travelcards from elsewhere do not give an entitlement to the free travel.

As this is an inboundary travelcard that shouldn't apply, but if Chiltern don't have a station in zone 2 it could be an issue.

Chiltern are getting much hotter on only allowing this perk to people who regularly use their trains.

I seem to remember there are some pretty complicated rules as to which station Travelcards are supposed to be issued from depending on what TOC sells them and what zones they cover, to try and ensure a fair revenue distribution. I don't think a Zones 2-6 Travelcard could be issued with an origin station of Marylebone since Marylebone isn't within those zones - but that doesn't mean it can't be issued at Marylebone station, just that the origin station shown on the Travelcard would be a different Chiltern station (i.e. one within the zones covered), to ensure Chiltern got the appropriate revenue share. Note that I am not completely sure about this, just guessing. And the revenue may be distributed differently for Travelcards issued on Oyster; I have no idea.

I think you will find that West Ruislip is managed by Chiltern unless something has changed over the years.

There is no Chiltern ticket office at West Ruislip however. The only Chiltern ticket office within zones 2-6 is at Northolt Park.

This is true but I was just pointing out that it is managed by them

Thank you for all your replies. I will go to Marylebone and find out when my ticket runs out later this month.
West Ruislip cannot sell me a ticket for Chiltern Railways. I have already tried.

It is a shame that I cannot get a ticket on Oyster card for South West Trains anymore (Wimbledon only does paper tickets nowadays).

Depending on how much you value your free weekend travel a denham extention to an travelcard only adds £24 a year to the cost of the travel card itself. That might be the way to go.
