Is it possible to buy a (non Oyster) extension ticket from Zone 6 Boundary to/from Chesham, and if so, how much would it be, compared with the Oyster equivalent?

(Day return, travelling to.from Chesham on the Metropolitan line from/to Central London).

Would any (further) discount be available if purchased using a (paper) Zones 1-6 "Gold" Travelcard?

Railcard (inc Gold Card) discounts do not currently apply to solely LUL travel. However, from January 2011 they will apply to all off-peak journeys on Oyster as long as the discount is stored on the card. I'm not sure about paper tickets though. I'm sorry but I also don't know whether LUL operate boundary tickets.

Only seems to be SDS and SDR at £2.30 and £4.60 with gold card discount from Avantix. Any rail ticket should be able to offer these.

I have bought a Boundary Zone 6 to Amersham ticket from Marylebone a long time ago. It didn't work the barriers at Amersham.

If, however, you are travelling on the tube (and not on the Chiltern train from Marylebone) then I think there may be an oyster reader on the platform at Moor Park - in which case you could touch in (£1.50 peak, £1.30 off peak) to touch out at Chesham without having to wait for a following train. I'm not sure though.

Try buying it from the Marylebone Chiltern ticket office rather than from the Underground station...?

Yes, would probably be travelling from Central London on the Metropolitan line.

Sorry don't follow the advice as regards "touching in and out" when using extension tickets purchased in conjunction with a (paper) Zones 1-6 "Gold" Travelcard? :|

I think he's suggesting that if you have an oyster card you could hop off the train at Moor Park (which is on the zone 6/7 boundary) touch in and get back on the same train so that you could then touch out at Chesham. This would be the cheapest way of making the part of your journey not covered by your season ticket.

Thanks for the clarification.

Anyhow, back to my original query.

Now I realise that Moor Park is the boundary of zone 6 it is easy. According to TfL's single fare finder, Moor Park to Chesham is £3.50 cash at any time, £1.50 Oyster in peak time and £1.30 Oyster of-peak. You won't beat those fares this year.

Buy a Bushey - London All Zones Travelcard, available from Thetrainline-powered websites (e.g. TPE, FSR, FGW etc) for £5.95 with Gold Card discount. This is valid to Chesham. It has "Also available at Zones 1-9" (or similar) printed on the ticket.

That would be physically impossible without the train being held for over a minute - the ticket gates are downstairs!

At 95p more for a Zones 1-9 Travelcard than a Zones 1-6 that is the solution. This is cheaper and less hassle than the touching in/out nonsense.

Just specify Bushey as the origin and London as the destination and it can be bought online.

In a sane world they'd let you put such a Travelcard on Oyster. There is no good reason whatsoever why they don't.

An earlier poster suggested that there might be a reader on the platforms. He wasn't sure, and if there isn't then I agree you won't get the same train.

Whilst there are some reasons why it would be handy to put a day travelcard on an oystercard (chiefly if you were roving around without touching out or in and thus likely to exceed the maximum journey time) I have to agree that it is actually right that they don't. I was pleasantly surprised by how few oystercards get capped each day when I made the FOI request (in respect of the withdrawl of the Z2-6 day travelcards). It would appear that in the majority of cases people actually only get charged for the journeys they make. If TfL allowed people to load a day travelcard onto their oyster I believe that a lot of people would end up paying more than they need. It is to TfL's credit that they aren't allowing such a money-making scam.

Notwithstanding the requirement to touch in/out at Moor Park, with an Oystercard the OP's journey would cost a maximum of £3.00 when made in conjunction with his Z1-6 travelcard season. And if that travelcard season were loaded on an Oystercard he wouldn't even need to get off at Moor Park because the system would automatically charge from the boundary on touching out at Chesham. And next year the gold card discount on off-peak fares would also apply to this route as it is being extended to tube and DLR routes.

I can confirm there are no readers on the platforms at Moor Park.
