Hi,

I have a Gold Card annual season ticket from Hemel to London, which includes Zones 1-6.

I need to make a one-off journey from London (St Pancras) to St Albans.

Am I right in thinking I can just buy a single from Elstree & Borehamwood (in Zone 6) to St Albans, even if the train doesn't stop between St Pancras and St Albans? And my season ticket covers me from St P to E&B?

Thanks - I always get confused about these boundary zones!

Yes, because one of your tickets is a season and the other one isn't, there's no need for the train to call at the point where you switch tickets, as per NRCOC 19c.

For a hassle free journey, yes you are right.

If you're feeling brave you probably don't need to buy any ticket. The shortest route between Hemel and Elstree is via St Albans Abbey walk to City. They both share a common routeing point (Watford Junction) so there is no need to consult maps or anything. You may need to be on a stopping service at Elstree, but if it saves you buying a ticket ...

Surely there is no more need to be on a service stopping at Elstree (or Up thereof) than there is to be on a service stopping at Hatch End (or Up thereof) on a Birmingham travel card?

Presumably the route is only valid Elstree - St Albans - Watford - Hemel, and not London - St Albans - Watford - Hemel. With an outboundary travelcard you can however choose which station inside the zones you wish to travel to/from and therefore the validity is worked out from that station. Therefore the passenger can travel "from" Elstree and it will be valid :)

If the route is from Elstree it would be difficult to justify use on anything except the all stops service as these are the only trains to stop at Elstree.
