Adulting GCSE: Things that should be mandatory to learn in school

Given a geeky interest in etymology had to look that one up - even if in jest! (And current mortgage completes at 55...) Anyways, according to records, it's the debt that dies not the debtor (or if failure to pay, the land/property mortgage is dead to the debtor due to it having been seized)

Do underground platforms normally have numbers? if so are they normally displayed to the public?

Yeah - but they rarely matter, with a few collected exceptions such as - Camden because two northern line branches; ditto Euston - Moorgate as the third terminating platform is used as well

Moving house - comparing commuting options using maths

The new Thameslink trains are pretty good. Or at least the declassified first class with comfortable (not ironing board) seats, and tables, and sockets and air con. Definitely a blessing after years of much much worse.

Moving house - comparing commuting options using maths

As others, Croydon is pretty well connected - moving further in won't help much. And tube from zone 2 can be same speed/as slow as train from further out. The radical change comes from a flat in zone 1 which is walking distance from office. But of course those flats tend to cost a small fortune...

Should the English language have a spelling reform?

It's easier to leave it alone. English is an organic and widely used language with a wealth of regional variations - and has been so for centuries. This contributes to it's flexibility and high-take up. And would render any attempt to tame and standardise it fairly pointless in the long term -...

    French DLR map

Mmm - I think tangled up with Jubilee - which reflects how long it's been since I was last in London due to Covid, despite having been on both lines hundreds of times. It's a nicely done map :) I like this kind of thing! Picking out some of the interesting history/language ones which might...

Could you extend any services to increase connectivity?

But a lot of people don't drive or can't afford a car. Or don't have the mobility to cope with the changes described. And that population tend to be comfortable with the extra time when traded off against access needs and costs.

    French DLR map

I can't see it either - and I'd really like to! Like, how have you handled Waterloo?

    Most hated non-UK station

Gare due Nord is ok. It has shops and life. The eurostar terminal isn't dreadful. I've spent many hours there - including delays. My main route from Western France to London was from Angers to London, either via Lille or Paris. The metro interchange in Paris is dreadful tho - I'd usually get a...

We have more immunity to SARS-CoV-2 than thought

It's been refer to in MSM somewhere. The active cases in London were already very low by then (unclear how many travelled in from a long distance tho) and many were masked. If they had travelled in - which is clearer that some of the troublemakers did - then those cases wouldn't be reported in...

We have more immunity to SARS-CoV-2 than thought

As is implied for Paris, given London's international connections, the virus was likely circulating in London well before March. A material number already had and, particularly in the centre, the lockdown in London was severe and effective. This partially reflects that large numbers of London's...

My opinion: Things need to change

The death rate is only one statistic. There are extensive reports of Covid leaving people with varying degrees of what looks to be long term damage, in some cases very significant. We remain a very very long way from immunity - very low outside London; within London it's around 20%. And...there...

Proposed redevelopment of St Pancras/Kings Cross by BR in 1966

Great thread. I rather like the over-the-top Victorian structure - it's grand and beautiful in its own way. London is an amazing and eclectic mix of historical styles. I like quite a lot of the modern station - the shopping arcade is good. The catering past the eurostar gateline is pretty...

Additional GTR calls from December 2020

Possibly just bad drafting / someone else writing the headline... the detail of the post is clear.

    Oddities of the English language?

English isn't a regulated language - it evolves even around the constraints of some rules and conventions. So that one is questionable and down to personal preference - it's not an absolute right or wrong. And English is so capable of evolving in some cases stuff that is "correct" at the...
