Two bits of the ECML have closed. In 1983, Chaloners Whin to Selby closed due to the Selby coalfield diversion. And also the section at Penmanshiel tunnel which closed in 1979 due to the tragic collapse whilst repairs were being made. Lisburn-Antrim is due for reopening, projected opening date...

When I was bashing the tractors on the Cumbrian coast I rarely got a useable signal for my MiFi unit. Looking at the coverage map, I see that almost all the line along the coastal section is no-go, so that bit is right. Westbury-Salisbury however is wrong, it shows as just the occasional no-go...

I saw 720101 at Stafford on Wednesday 24/04. It was looking immaculate, with plastic coverings still on the seats.

The plan was never a from everywhere to everywhere service, it was for a set of individual services with interchanges of a few minutes at any station in the central section.

It's reported elsewhere that the short lease on the 221s is to allow the 180s to receive a good going over. Some of the mis-formed units have already been put back into correct formation. Once this is overhaul procedure is completed they won't need the 221s.
