    Royal Mail redirection service

I've used RM redirection frequently whilst working (~6 months at a time) away from my permanent home. After some problems I discovered that it's the postie themselves (for the address you're redirecting from) who spots mail addressed to that address whilst finally sorting a street's mail...

[Switzerland] Why loco hauled trains for the Wengen Shuttle?

It's more complex than that. The railway has one diesel generator set module (in a glorified box which can be moved around with fork-lift truck) which can be installed ("easily" presumably) in any one of the three Wengen Shuttle locos 41 - 43 - hence the unique classification He(m)4/4.

    Signalling Variety in UK?

It does. Train order issued for one return journey by duty Controller at Ravenglass, with confirmation of authority to proceed into each section (other than leaving Ravenglass, which is semaphore signalled) given by Radio.

    Another incident at Grange-over-Sands 01 March 2025

I don't think anyone else has posted about this (yesterday), which is surprising. https://cumbriacrack.com/2025/03/01/passenger-train-collides-with-vehicle-and-trailer-in-grange-over-sands/ Almost exactly the same location as last year's sinkhole-related derailment and it sounds as though it...

    Old/Unusual Traction in Switzerland

I think you are confusing two different lines, near each other. Yverdon - Ste-Croix is metre gauge with typical Swiss light railway units, not (AFAIK) due for rebuilding as it has been gradually modernised over the last decade or so. Orbe - Chavornay is standard gauge at 750v dc, currently...

Special trains from London Waterloo to Witley, Surrey

Heading off at a bit of a tangent, but as a (day, state grammar) schoolboy catching the train home from Woking each day 1969-76, Sherborne School had a special to/from Waterloo which I saw at the beginning and end of each term. Diesel hauled by that time (memory fading, but I THINK Warship...

Using Cumbrian Coast to visit Ravenglass & Eskdale - sensible atm?

    4. Yes! EDIT: Just an alert that Network Rail has closed the footbridge over their line to the R&ER for heavy refurbishment. Leave the northbound NR platform at the north end (front in direction of travel) through the pedestrian gate beside the Ratty Arms pub (old station building), head...

    Preserved railways' patrons

As a long-time volunteer on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, I have certainly clocked a noticeable increase (from almost zero 10+ years ago) in Indian-subcontinent ethnic origin families visiting. It's not that uncommon for them to come in large extended-family groups. If there are English...

17/06/24 6X24 Sellafield to Barrow Docks failed at Silecroft

The video on Facebook ("Cumbrian Coast Railways" group IIRC) showed the train moving with only 1 axle on skates, so <8 (is it a skate per axle or per wheel?)

Countries where rail traffic drives on a different side to road traffic

Zürich (Switzerland) trams are generally right-hand running as you would expect for a historically street-running tramway network. But routes 7 and 9 between Milchbuck and Schwamendingerplatz (exclusive) use a tunnel which was built in anticipation of construction of a Metro which never...

4VEP 3417 back on mainline, still fundraising

Baie de Somme galas (France) 2013 and 2016 (and possibly others but those are the only ones I have attended). The big industrial generator filled about half a coach (which had been butchered on one side to insert it). Don't think the speed was as bad as you remember, though it was a...
