    UK General Election 2024

Do you genuinely believe that immediately after Starmer winning their first general election for 18 years, a majority of Labour MPs would vote to boot him out in favour of a new leader from the same wing of the party who only 5 years earlier delivered Labour's worst General Election performance...

    Generational Smoking Bans

There exists a picture of me aged 3 doing exactly that  I also remember beer glass shaped gummy sweets which did actually taste of beer.

Tourism : Hidden Gems within the UK .. where ?

Not sure I'd really call it hidden, great place to visit but it was pretty busy the last time we went 2 years ago. Somewhere which I think does qualify is Caldey Island, reachable by boat from Tenby and relatively quiet in terms of visitor numbers.

    Football

For reasons best known to themselves the English FA decided to continue to impose the one team per city rule in the early years of the UEFA cup (where there was no such stipulation by UEFA) after it had replaced the Fairs Cup, with priority given to the League Cup winners. This led to the...

    Football

No, I couldn't find anything about it either when I googled but I was sure I'd read something to that effect a while ago (probably at least 10 years ago). Maybe I dreamt it :s

Weren't these no longer required parachute payments (for clubs immediately promoted back to the PL) shared between Championship clubs at one time, or have I imagined that?

    Supermarkets discussion

It does highlight how ridiculous this exemption is. Britain should have gone fully metric decades ago rather than the silly 'almost but not quite' situation we have now.

Most Overrated Tourist Spots / Attractions in the UK .. where ?

Doesn't really meet the definition of over rated as that would require a large number of people actually like the place. I don't recall the last time I heard anyone say Blackpool was anything other that an utter dump.

2024 Local, Mayoral and PCC Elections

A pre-requisite for that is the media to lead by example. Considering "loony left" (to take one example) was a term coined by the likes of The Sun back in the 80s I see no realistic hope of that ever happening.

2024 Local, Mayoral and PCC Elections

That would make sense, it certainly explains the reversal in the independents changes between the Guardian and BBC figures.

2024 Local, Mayoral and PCC Elections

Where are you seeing those numbers? BBC totals after 106 councils declared are similar to yours as I'd expect but the change values don't look right: Labour 1140 +185 Lib Dem 521 +104 Conservative 513 -473 Independants & Others 282 +110 Green 181 +74

2024 Local, Mayoral and PCC Elections

The two independent "gains" were actually sitting councillors who were elected as Labour candidates in the last election but resigned from the party last year in protest at Labour's position on Gaza.

    Trivia: Road name changes

Grape Lane in York had what is now a very NSFW name in medieval times, with similarly named streets in a number of other English cities at the time.

Trivia: Smallest town by population to have more than one station

Greenock beats that with a population of 41,000 and 8 stations.

Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Party.

I received a very different hand delivered letter from his campaign team a couple of days ago which makes no mention of either Johnson, Brexit or Reform, no Black Country flag either despite the fact I live there. Maybe he's taken inspiration from George Galloway and is producing different...

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

I thought Everest went out of business years ago, I can't remember the last time I heard them mentioned or saw an advert for them.

SNP ends power sharing with the Scottish Greens - Humza Yousaf resigns as SNP leader

If the pro-independence parties fail to collectively win a majority of seats at the next assembly elections I think a minority government is virtually guaranteed. A Labour/Conservative coalition won't happen for the reasons you mention, an SNP/Labour coalition may be more palatable to Scottish...

Donald Trump and the aftermath of his presidency

Artists impressions/mock-ups/etc that never came to fruition?

I've seen all the other images in this thread before but that's a new one for me. The front reminds me of the LMS Coronation Class. Interesting that a single cab configuration was considered for such a large loco.
