29 new trains for Transpennine Express ?

Maybe similar 'under the hood', but 'Inter City' rolling stock should be suitable for longer journeys, probably end doors, provision of first class, more luggage space, seat reservation hardware. Units long enough to ensure plenty of capacity, possibly ~7 car units depending upon coach length...

29 new trains for Transpennine Express ?

The problem with this is also that 6tph doesn't allow paths for the stoppers, so the Inter City services end up making local stops between Manchester and Huddersfield, which is less than ideal as rolling stock needs are totally different. Timetable also collapses into chaos throughout the region...

Transpennine Express to Scarborough - Will it always be a shuttle to York?

Its not so much conflict as the reality that if your journey finishes in Manchester then Victoria is fine, even if it is a dump. There are trams/buses/taxis to all areas. The issue is if you need to change in Manchester, as most onwards destinations are served from Piccadilly. Having to get...

Bad ride quality in some 80x carriages

OK that explains why only that coach was affected, and it makes sense. Carriage was also full, ~70 people plus luggage say another ~6t of load, not sure if that comes into it. It was certainly an undamped vibration rather than reflection of track imperfections into the coach. Started suddendly...

Transpennine Express to Scarborough - Will it always be a shuttle to York?

8-10 years?? and there no approved plans currently, seems a bit of a tall order. I was think of something quick to deliver, using a bit of the car park, there is already a spur which finishes at the train shed, probably just one extra platform.

Transpennine Express to Scarborough - Will it always be a shuttle to York?

I agree that carrying on to Liverpool, whilst useful to me caused problems, my thinking would be to run via Guide Bridge and terminate in the low numbered platforms at Piccadilly, still retains Man Picc onward connections, but avoids the conflicts and keeps it away from Castlefield. You could...

Transpennine Express to Scarborough - Will it always be a shuttle to York?

There are two problems with this: As soon as the through service is introduced reliabiltity plummetts, late running, and even worse short running terminating at Malton or not even making it out of York. This means problems for connecting passengers at Seamer and huge gaps in service from Seamer...

    1990s Bolton Area False Memory?

Just north of Salford Crescent there are the Tarmac sidings, and just south of Salford Crescent theres a short strech where where the Windsor chord and the line from Victoria merges.

Bad ride quality in some 80x carriages

I know this has been aired in other threads, but I want to relate our experience this weekend. Travelling between Doncaster and Peterborough we were in coach J of a 9 coach unit. 3 times there were spells of violent vertical vibrations. Maybe not at 'going to leave the tracks level', but very...

    Barrow Crossings

At Brid I think the issue may be more to do with the definition of 'level'. The ramps are quite steep, fine for a large wheely suitcase, buggy or shopping trolley, but more of a challenge maybe for a wheelchair. At Brid there is much simpler solution which would work most of the time, if...

    Generational moment ...

Yes, I think in my parents case "Is it a corridor train" was euphamism "Are there toilets". I used to go out and play pool with my mates and would often meet them in Oxted as I was the odd one out living in inner London, and would always make sure to get in the 'right' carriage for the journey...

    Generational moment ...

Going back into my days growing up the 60s a lot of non railway people, certainly in the SE refered to 'corridor trains' or the 'corridor', this was in the days when a lot of local services were non gangwayed, no toilets, and frequently individual compartments.

    Upskirting Train Driver Avoids Prison

I can remember responding something like "I am unable to offer any information or references regarding this individual" in response to a request for a reference for someone who had resigned, but would have been sacked had they not resigned. I was their last supervisor, and did the 'brow wipe'...

Catering on short-haul services (or light rail/trams/metros) - could it work?

Transpennine Express have been getting more and more patchy with their offerings on the North route. Hull Trains have recenctly introduced a trolley service in standard class On board catering has been in decline for years, with dining car services disappearing for the most part. If on board...

    Barrow Crossings

Bridlington still has its barrow crossing, just. Work has been ongoing for sometime to install lifts and refurbish the footbridge, but seems to be stalled at the moment, I know that corrosion issues were worse than expected in the existing footbridge. Platforms 5 and 6 have level access anyway...

East-West Rail (EWR): Oxford-Bletchley construction progress

One slightly off topic point that this thread raises: Route learning. Normally the learner would be accompanied by an instructor/driver passed for the route I assume. But someone must be the first to learn it with a new railway, how does that work.

Mobile Phone Coverage on Main Lines

An interesting map. Looking at my local area the coverage map pretty much agrees with my experience. Tunnels and deep cuttings are always going to be a problem, however one intersting spot is the Standedge Tunnel, for many years 3 network has worked from the Manchester side until well over 2...

Rail nationalisation: ideas, suggestions, predictions etc

I think a lot of the problems could be overcome with minimal infrastructure issues, thinking around our area all Northern services would be regional, LNER, XC Newcastle - Birmingham - Onwards, Hull Trains and GC would be intercity and the only problem would be TPE. IMO a lot of York Leeds...

    Generational moment ...

I am of that generation, Main line steam was on the wane growing up, I was brought up in Southern electric land and it was only really seen on freight before being replaced by diesel, apart from the SW main line, had a couple of trips to Bournemouth behind Merchant Navy locos, and have a couple...

Rail nationalisation: ideas, suggestions, predictions etc

I totally agree that HS2 as originally proposed was an excellent idea, it would have speeded up journeys and added capacity to the 3 mainlines north out of London as well as the cross country stuff via Birmingham. It was going to be expensive, but to me it was the sort of infrastructure project...
