Bus max load display. Still mandatory?

It always surprises me that buses quite rightly have a maximum capacity due to weight issues, but trains have no limits at all!

Trivia: Where can you still buy a single for less than £2?

Greenwave50 journeys within Green Park are free!!

What was your favourite bus type as a kid?

Southdown Leyland PD3, especially the open top ones. We didn't live in the area, but holidays and many summer weekends were spent on Hayling Island.

Trivia : Open top buses that have appeared on non tourist services

Out again a couple of days ago, did at least one trip after dark, which would have been interesting. Sadly they don't seem to announce it's being used in advance, so its just pot luck.

Overcrowding on cross country 1128 Exeter to Edinburgh

Is there actually a limit as to how many standing passengers are allowed in a carriage? Buses have a limit of seated and standing passengers on safety grounds, does this not apply to trains.

Trivia: Pay As You Go on UK bus services

I've noticed them, but it seems a bit odd as majority of their routes are flat fare.

Trivia : Open top buses that have appeared on non tourist services

I agree, I don't particularly like partial open toppers, or even those with just a front window, but I assume in these days of Health and Safety, "proper" open toppers like Southdown's Queen Marys could be problematic vis a vis low trees etc.

Could we see additional stations in the Reading area?

Putting a station in Sonning Cutting would involve passengers having to go up or down an awful lot of steps to reach it!!

Trivia : Open top buses that have appeared on non tourist services

Was in use on the Purple 17 yesterday. Not announced, so it was a pleasant surprise when it turned up, I was going into town anyway!

    Tesco Train Inverness

Anything ambient required by the Tesco stores. Don't think the containers are able to be temperature controlled for chilled or frozen goods, but I may be wrong.

Onboard bus announcements to be made mandatory

Reading's system seems to work well. As you get on it announces the route and direction i.e. "17 to Tilehurst" then as it pulls away "next stop ...." and when it stops, "this stop is...." plus a visual display showing the same. What is interesting is they obviously did the recordings in batches...

Rail electrification possible for 95% of UK freight trains, CILT research reveals

I wish I could get £300,000 from my trucks, the only one that gets over £200,000 is used day and night, 7 days a week, loaded both ways. The majority are £150,000 or less. Profit margin is around 2%.

Rail electrification possible for 95% of UK freight trains, CILT research reveals

I wouldn't call £1,000 vehicle excise duty and £5000 fuel duty per annum free use of the road for an HGV. Rail freight is great for moving bulk loads, aggregate etc, but the majority of freight is small amounts from one place nowhere near a railway to several other places equally nowhere near a...

Rail electrification possible for 95% of UK freight trains, CILT research reveals

Didn't think about batteries, obviously you couldn't load containers etc under overhead wires!

Rail electrification possible for 95% of UK freight trains, CILT research reveals

Electric traction between depots could be feasible, but presumably you would still need diesel traction at the loading and unloading points.

What kind of bus enthusiast are you?

Started as a train spotter as a young boy, but interest waned as steam disappeared, and became more and more interested in buses as time went on. One uncle was a conductor on Thames Valley, another a trolleybus driver, then driving instructor for Reading Corporation as it was then. Still...

    Southdown Motor Services Outstations

A small shed, usually big enough for 1 or 2 buses at the end of a longer route so that vehicles were available for early morning runs back to town. Also known as outstations. The driver/crew would live locally. Popular in the 50's but don't know of any now. I think the name comes from the French...

    Women freight drivers

They certainly allow you to release when you need to, and hold a surprising amount too:D. Sorry if this is too much information:oops:

    Women freight drivers

I have a similar problem, after prostate cancer treatment, but I can assure you that Tena's are very successful!!
