Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

That's good as it should remove the principal objection.

Ha ha ha, yes a mixed traffic railway, how ridiculous. It's not as though pretty much every main line in the country is mixed traffic ...........oh ! 1715169898 What are these 2 large visitor attractions that will be affected ? I know the bycicle route would have to be lost, but what is the...

Idea for a bi-directional line between Shipley & Bradford

I'd have thought there'd be more benefit between Leeds and Shipley to ease the mix of fast, stopping and freight trains (although I realise they'd have to amend a lot of new stations and dig out Thackley old tunnel).

Scotrail Peak Fares Abolition - any results ?

That's good news. I wonder what the other parties will say.

Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

I stand corrected. I look forward to seeing some new routes proposed by Network Rail to truly smash my scepticism. However, for all your talk of the line not improving resilience/capacity in any meaningful way, I can't help but note that millions have just been spent upgrading the Hope Valley...

Your favourite seaside terminus English station (and town)

Yes, you get a very good view of it ! 1715149509 Yes, that's a good'un.

Your favourite seaside terminus English station (and town)

I like it more than the more honeypot resorts. It's got some decent pubs and the walks to St Michaels Mount and Mousehole are splendid.

Your favourite seaside terminus English station (and town)

Bexhill has quite an impressive seafront and the remaining Central station is very impressive, but it's not a terminus. However, the old West station was a very impressive terminus and the booking hall is still there (had tea and a scone there last year).

Thing is, I've had a couple of good railtours along that branch.

Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

There have been various studies in the past that have illustrated the potential benefits of the line, however my main argument rests on the success of similar regional railway routes such as the S&C, the Cumbrian Coast, Okehampton etc in serving local traffic. In terms of EW Rail, I'm very glad...

To improve the local public transport network and provide more capacity and resilience to the wider railway system. Fairly obvious I'd have thought.

Your favourite seaside terminus English station (and town)

Weymouth is a good one, good train service and excellent seaside harbour. My favourite would be Penzance. A grand terminus befitting the end of the line and a lovely town.

Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

As I've explained before, you only have to look at the geography of the area to see that it has more potential for passenger traffic than the intermediate stations on the Hope Valley. There is simply more there. And if you cared to read my post correctly you would see that whilst I acknowledge...

Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

It's not "too far" from Manchester in general, just too far to make it a dormitory area. 1715008769 Commuting isn't the be all and end all. It is mildly amusing that some people are so against this line that they are prepared to simultaneously argue that it will both be pointless because no...

Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

I think there is a reasonable argument that over-touristing an area can lead to issues. But I don't think a regional link of this type is going to have a particularly adverse effect on the area. One only has to look at other regional routes such as the S&C. Similarly, the area is a bit too far...

People going shopping, people going on holiday, people going to work, people visiting cultural events, people on business etc. Anything where people go about their business. 1715003502 That night be fine for shorter trips, however to meet the routes full regional potential, you'd need...

Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

Economic geography is not primarily driven by commuting. Buxton to London via Derby would likely be competitive with via Stockport, however it would also bring the East Midlands area within easier reach. 1715001395 I would suggest that the full triangular junction should be reinstated at the...

Should a new Northern Network Railcard be introduced?

Quite. Like many medium distance journeys in the North, there simply are no reasonably priced options. It's not even as though Leeds/Wakefield and Manchester are a particularly long way from eachother, however TPE's delusions of grandeur have to be paid for by passengers.

Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

NR clearly aren't in a position to adjudicate on the transport needs off of the network EW rail is a necessary project but again, it is a large politically generated project. I very much doubt that NR initiated it. And Okehampton was still on the network anyway. With regard to your last...

Derby Telegraph "Plans to convert Monsal Trail back into railway takes 'significant step forward'"

People don't make those journeys because they're not easy to make. Tourism might not a business case make, however as we've seen with Okehampton, where you have tourism combined with settlements with inadequate public transport, new services can be well used. 1714987248 Fortunately as I've...
