Thanks for your thoughts. I'm more into routes and places to stop than the particular type of train but that route sounds good. It looks like the closest to Lyon that I can get to from Reggio Calabria is Turin. Does anyone have any thoughts on the getting from Turin to Lyon bit?

The purchasing of SNCF Interrail reservations on Rail Europe appears to work very well.

I booked a last minute reservation from Strasbourg last year and everybody was wedged in downstairs. So I went upstairs which was only 60% full so plenty of places to change to and no risk of being asked to move as Paris was the next stop.

Would the change up to an hour before apply to booking Interrail reservations maybe?

I often check various sources when planning but I used to use the Interrail App as a starter. However now, apart from a list of stations, it has no built in timetable that I can see. It always says, "Enter journey manually"

Thanks. Yes all going to plan as I type - due into Bari in about 80 minutes. The TTPER regional train from Milan was very crowded but I managed to get a seat - it was taking at least 5 minutes at each stop as people tried to get on and off (mainly, on) so we arrived at Bologna 25 minutes late...

sure and the nuance under discussion is that if a train goes from A to B to C and all the odd number seats are taken from A to B and all the even number seats from B to C, then there will be no availability from A to C despite the train only ever being 50% full...

It must be an issue for long journeys where any company insists on pre-booked tickets only. They lose sales from someone who would be happy to move seats part way through a long journey.

Just for general information, I paid €6.85 for Madrid to Irun plus €4 each for Merida to Puertollano and for Puertollano to Madrid.
