BTW, for those keeping a record (probably just me... :p) he got Glossop and Irlam on 21st March, but Hebden Bridge had still not been converted at that date.

Which is odd as I know of a member who got new style tickets from Hebden Bridge on the 20th!

Hello all,

Thank you for the feedback, it is all being logged and fed back to RSP, most useful. I will try to get back to people individually, but a tad busy at the moment.

Not sure if it helps, but I have attached some images of the more common types out there. Note that the supplier did not have the most up to date specimen stock when they issued these for me, but you get the idea.

Attached are some more examples of tickets, which had been ordered online and were collected from Pannal TVM. The travelcard and advance tickets aren't in the new design, nor is the web off-peak day return. The Zone 1 to Upminster ticket didn't print properly either.

Better than what I got then from ToDing at the machine at Burley Park, they all printed in the traditional format!

The Zone 1 to Upminster ticket didn't print properly either.

Is it Zone 1 or is it's some other Zone I certainly can't tell. And as for when it's valid, other than sometime in April whose to say when exactly it is valid?

Brilliant

ToDs aren't enabled in the new format yet, this should be ready soon. Travelcards have not yet had a new format designed, as that requires a joint agreement with TfL.

Lots of blank empty wasted space on non-Advance tickets by the look of it?

Can't some of the text be moved down so there's never any chance of it being written right on the edge, or even over the orange strip?

And if it was necessary because some tickets will use up the whole height, why not make the orange strips a bit narrower?

Because simple design concepts are never seen by so-called "specialists".

Well they have, as I have seen a TOD ticket collected at Burley Park. Will post the picture tomorrow.

Has this been forgotten about? I note a number of other locations, inlcuding Mauldeth Road have now been converted. However, despite trying there, at Glossop and at Burley Park, I have not got any new-style tickets when TODing.

Furthermore, I take it that northernman was referring earlier to this which Northern announced today:

Exciting news - Today, at 92 of our stations we have launched new style ticketing machines which also allow you to view live train running information.

These #SmartTVMs will allow you to check which platform your train is leaving from and whether it has been delayed.

We are the first train operator in the UK to offer this facility and we would love to hear your feedback. Do you like it? Is there anything we could do to make it better? Would you like to see these machines at more of our stations?

Let us know!

Does this have a thread? Can't see one!

Sorry, but a smart TVM needs to have an ITSO reader. This is a gimmick.

Got a new style ticket at Knutsford yesterday.

I thought it had printed the receipt first.

I'm not so sure about that, Southern's TVMs have had live train running information for several months now.

There's starting to be lots of these tickets kicking around in Northern areas. They're certainly slowing up my ticket checks as I now have to read every minute detail rather than just glancing but hey ho, if it means a few more go for free who cares :p

Northern says that all their Parkeon machines are now using the new format.

I have seen most ticket types, including TOD collections, printed in the new format, except Advance tickets.

Very annoyingly the seat reservations for walk up ticket types are printed on separate coupons with the same old layout and 1 coupon per leg, despite the actual ticket being the new format, and as it isn't an Advance, has half the ticket blank - just where the reservation could be. This makes it even more confusing than before for people to get the right coupons handy for inspection.

I was in the Merseyside and Manchester area at the weekend and found/bought new-style tickets from the following:

  • Littleborough (m/c 1017)
  • Newton-le-Willows (m/c 1020)
  • Ashton-under-Lyne (m/c 1028)
  • Mills Hill (m/c 1067)

...so that bears out what others have said about all machines having been converted. Also just to confirm, Receipts remain in the traditional format.

If anybody could provide a scan of a ToD-issued new-layout ticket, I'd be grateful - ta.

Ahhh, that's why none of my TODs are coming out then!

What a genius design! I almost have the urge to say... , no, must resist it. <D

As the reservation isn't mandatory (and consequently doesn't need to be inspected at all) I would support this approach. It avoids creating hassle for those who get a different train.

Surely the only "hassle" is asking someone if they can use the ticket on another service? I see quite a few of them already!

The old 'airline' tickets made it clearer stating 'Suggested service' so no-one reading that might think it was mandatory.

It's a bit depressing really, the times I've used tickets printed in the new format I've had very odd (but non-obstructive, thankfully) reactions:

  1. Guard said, as if annoyed at the world, "Oh it's one of those new tickets. They are very difficult to read."
  2. Guard looked entirely non-plussed by what I presented asking what it was, I said "Apparently it's a new-style ticket?" She responded that she hadn't seen anything about one, but would have a look 'for [her] own benefit'.
  3. Guard goes "Oh did you get that from Glossop?" (I hadn't) "Glossop started issuing them a few weeks back but I just can't work out what all these funny circles and diamonds on them mean!"
  4. One guard said I was the first passenger he'd seen with a new ticket and "oh so that's what they look like!" He was glad he knew of the existence of a new design or he would have thought it was fake. (I'm like; 'great!?').

To which TOCs did the breif supposedly go? I take it not all of them as would be most sensible...

It's great that so many members of staff haven't seen them isn't it?! You'd think every person ever likely to see them would have had some basic training and given examples of all the variants (to help detect for fraudulent ones). Heck, even drivers occasionally get asked questions by passengers so even they should be given a basic briefing.

Well done ATOC and any TOC that hasn't briefed the poor staff who have to check them or help people with enquiries.

It would also be great to have a website explaining the new tickets to the public (which staff could also use) as we've had the current type for so long that I bet many ordinary people will be confused and need some reassurance. Many people don't get change (just look at when Facebook fiddles around with its look).

From an earlier thread, isn't it just circle = "check railcard held" and diamond = "check it's really a child".

Or something like that. Has anyone seen any different symbols? Perhaps they could just print 'Railcard' or 'Child' in the same place, unless it really is a cunning plan to catch out some types of fare evasion...

Unfortunately, you can brief as many staff as you like, but you can't force them to take anything in. Some staff just like to carry on as if they know it all and don't need briefings.

Railcard tickets say 'with railcard' on them already... I know exactly what they meant, it was just an example.
