From the BBC earlier today.

London Midlands: Extra seats on West Midlands trains

More than 2,300 extra seats a day are being made available on West Midlands trains in a battle against overcrowding.

London Midland said the increased capacity, from Sunday, would come from additional services and in some cases extra carriages.

The company runs services from Birmingham to stations across the West Midlands.

It follows a £93m investment in new rolling stock announced in August.

London Midland replaced 150 of its 25-year-old fleet with 172 new trains, which entered service in the autumn.

Alex Hynes, from the company, said the changes would "go a considerable way to addressing overcrowding on several routes across the Midlands".

Walsall and Leamington services are due to see the greatest increases with more than 600 extra seats across the day.

The company said the Lichfield to Redditch line would see extra seats made available by increasing the number of trains across the day.

It added that some services between Lichfield and Redditch and from Shrewsbury to Birmingham would also see shorter journey times.

Spot the mistake.....

Usual standard from the BBC these days

BBC have now edited the item:

London Midland replaced its ageing 150 class fleet with new 172 class trains, which entered service in the autumn.

Just the headline 'London Midlands' to fix now.....

Are they ever referred to as "150 class" and "172 class"? Surely it's the other way round. It sounds really odd.

It's more like how the navy class some ships. Like Daring class destroyers, or Renown class battle cruisers.

To a degree when you're using names for classes, but under the type system the order is the same as the railway i.e. Type 45 (Daring Class) or Type 23 (Duke Class). It certainly is weird seeing 150 Class or 172 Class though!

They're obviously thinking about Castle Class and Hall class; although strictly of course, they were 4073 Class and 4900 Class.

Even better. We don't use the NNN Class designator, we use the Class NNN designator. Since when have we used the Class-after-number convention?

we were more than happy to take the 'ageing' 150's down in the South West (leading to the latest 'removal' of the '142's' from down this way) ;)

Does anyone know how many new carriages are coming to the National Rail network in 2012 and 2013?

They've only gone and cocked up again!

From the BBC:

Bristol trains get six extra carriages

Trains in the Bristol area have been fitted with six extra carriages, First Great Western has announced.

The company said the extra space, which was introduced on Monday, would provide another 800 seats on the Severn Beach line and the Henbury loop.

Last month the train operator announced it would introduce 48 more carriages to services across its network next year.

The firm said it had "worked hard" to have the carriages ready for the launch of the December timetable.

So, according to the BBC there are to be extra seats provided on a freight only line. Where have they found the space to put extra seats on Class 66s? Unless the Henbury loop has been re-opened to passenger trains and new stations built without anyone noticing!:roll::roll:

And, it's not as if they can hide behind the excuse that they were given duff info by FGW. Their press release makes no mention of the Henbury loop. Why would it?

I've never known "class" being used as a prefix rather than a suffix when the class had a name rather than a number, although nowadays we don't seem to use the word "class" at all when referring to Adelentes, Voyagers, Meridians etc. As far as I remember GWR / BR WR steam locos always had the numbers first (ie 57XX class), but equally the Standard 73XXX series were always Class 5, never 5 Class.

There was an article in the Telegraph a while ago, in which their transport correspondent wrote about a record breaking French train whose loco was named "Bo-Bo".

TBH, which news organisation covers itself in glory when writing about railways? (outside the specialist press)

The BBC is rapidly becoming a national embarassment.

Bad reporting, obscene political bias and an utter inability to take blame.

If ever there was an organisation that needed a big shake up!

...because they didn't realise that the Class 150s weren't 150 trains?

Over-reaction?
