The 1332 Barrow Ramsden Dock to Sellafield freight working is reported to have derailed in the vicinity of Salthouse Junction at around 1320.

I believe emergency services & NR are on site, but I have no details about any damage. Passenger workings through this area are suspended at the moment.

Update: A local news article can be found here. Apparently the train is upright and (unsurprisingly but fortunately) there is no risk to the public from nuclear materials.
Emergency services declare incident closed after Barrow nuclear train derailment

The incident happened at Salthouse Junction, near Barrow train station, shortly after 2pm.

A spokesman from International Nuclear Services Ltd (INS), a subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) responsible for the management and transport of nuclear material, said the train had been on the way to Sellafield carrying empty nuclear flasks.

He said: "The flasks were being transported from Barrow and had been shipped to the UK from Japan."

A statement from Direct Rail Services, the train operator responsible for the afflicted service, said: "Work will now focus on recovering the derailed rolling stock. An investigation will be carried into the cause of derailment in accordance with Rail and Nuclear Transport Regulations."

Earlier today DRS released a statment saying: "At approximately 2pm today two wagons on a DRS train were involved in a slow speed (walking pace) derailment at Salthouse Junction, near Barrow.

"The train, which was carrying three empty waste flasks, from Barrow terminal, was destined for Sellafield. No-one was injured as a result of the incident and all appropriate railway procedures have been activated, in accordance with standard industry requirements. DRS personnel are attending the site and information on when the wagons will be re-railed will be provided as soon as this is available."

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesperson said: “BTP officers were called to the line close to Barrow-in-Furness rail station following a report that a freight train had partially derailed.

“The incident, which was reported to BTP at 2.13pm, is currently being treated as a railway operating incident.

“The train, an empty nuclear train operated by Direct Rail Services, was travelling at around 5mph. All wagons have remained upright and there are no reported injuries.”

A spokeswoman from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service confirmed a call was received at 2.18pm reporting a train derailment in Barrow.

The spokeswoman said five appliances were called to the scene but no further action was required and the incident posed no risk to the public.

The train was still upright and control of the incident has been passed over to Direct Rail.

Fire crews from Walney, Dalton and Barrow attended.

Passenger services have been disrupted and replacement bus services are running on trains out of Barrow.

I get very annoyed when people claim that there is (or should be) some impenetrable veil of secrecy over nuclear transportation movements for spent fuel.

The idea that someone is going to abscond with the fuel or something is absurd, and as 'Operation Smash Hit' proved, actually damaging the flask sufficiently to cause release of material is beyond almost all weapons that typical 'terrorists' have at their disposal.

I doubt even a car bomb would manage it.

You gunna share some details the Mr Planner?

Nothing much to share, incident just notes that 7X24 had derailed at Salthouse GF and the fire service were advised of the incident. Racked up 1011 minutes of delay.

NRE currently advising things won't get back to normal until end of service on Thursday (19th) and that the line will be closed completely on Thursday between 0900 and 1600 to allow removal of train. Otherwise trains still running (with delays) on the unaffected track. Anybody going to Barrow on Wednesday care to take some pics!? :p

From what I saw today the loco wasn't derailed (or had been rerailed) and the container wagons were derailed and sat on the trap points on the branch to the docks. There were a few police cars scattered around and the line seems to be pilot worked from Dalton Junction to Barrow station.

Is anything running via Park South Junction / Dalton Junction while the recovery operation takes place ?
(eg 0838 from Preston, 1332 and 1534 from Lancaster, 0907 from Sellafield, 0940 and 1150 from Carlisle)

Ground conditions sounds like having problems accessing the site or getting enough support for a crane.
