How useful is open government data really? How much can you use to build things that make a difference to people's lives?

It turns out that some of the most useful is the least dramatic. Recently, the Association of Train Operating Companies opened up its own data vaults to the world.

It effectively means that National Rail Enquiries - which requires a licence to use its data - no longer has a monopoly on rail enquiries. Something which Bristol chemistry undergrad Ian Shortman took advantage of to create trains.im - an open source train timetable service.

Out of interest, are you on the forum Ian? :)

It looks like TrainTimes.im or OpenTrainTimes.com, but with slightly fewer features on the homepage than TrainTimes.im. It's still an interesting project, though, and I do like the mapping and the layout of the "Detailed" data. I also like the clear station and junction three-letter codes. That's really handy!

I've just read that and saw a comment from "telstarbox" linking to the forum and wondered whether you were one and the same... :)

It is me!

Glad to hear people like it. The server has taken quite a beating today.

I'm using the data.atoc.org data (which is under cc-by-sa licence) - hence the lack of empty movements and freight data. I'm happy to hear ideas!
