It's not an exactly iconic building is it?

The only thing that makes it stick out to me are the two gnomes that are stuck to the side of the damn thing.

Quite; "bog standard" BR(LM) type structure of which there are several others still in existence, Kirkby Stephen, Uttoxeter, Llandudno Junction, Stafford No.4 and Townsend Fold (on the ELR) spring to mind immediately - there are probably more.

Crossing the railway at Hest Bank crossing today I almost shat myself as I looked right and saw a Pendolino almost atop me. Luckily it was stationary. To my left were a bunch of orange vests amid the the four foot, seemingly taking a guess at the track gauge.

After about five minutes later the barriers dropped and two Pendolinos passed on the crossing at low speed.

Any inside knowledge here of what was going on?

This gave me a giggle!

About 150 (BR Type 15's) in number although some were reused as 2nd hand. e.g. Llandudno Junction had parts from one of the boxes that went on the West Hampstead Resignalling in the late 1970's. Kirkby Stephen - parts came 2nd hand from Kendal and so on. The first one was built and opened at Goostrey in 1954. Uttoxeter was the last of its type built (2nd hand) as a mechanical box. Llandudno Junction is the last one built and used (containing an NX panel and opened in 1985). Signalboxes thereafter have been built as a non standard design.

All changed back in 1994 when the old Morecambe station was demolished and the current one was built, until then there was pointwork to allow 'normal' (if you like) running.

It was a signalling-cost-minimising excercise: the two tracks to Morecambe are controlled as seperate single lines from Bare Lane, and the points at Morecambe are hand lever and hydro-pneumatic. At the time, there was little or no passenger service to Heysham so the loop at Morecambe was only provided for the power station trains.

It is one of those places where the COSS briefing on line names and directions gets just a touch involved.
