If you start a journey at an underground station and finish at a DLR station do you only need to touch in at the start of the underground journey and out at the end of the DLR journey? For example, Kings Cross to Greenwich via Bank. Northern line and then DLR. Do I just touch in at Kings Cross and out at Greenwich? Or do I touch out at Bank Underground and in at Bank DLR as well? Thanks

I'd also like to know the answer to the same question with a combined Underground / Overground journey.

Both these with pay as you go.

If you have to leave a station and go to another one, even with the same name (e.g. Shadwell LO to Shadwell DLR), you must touch out and back in. If you go through ticket gates on your way, ditto. For Kings Cross St. Pancras to Greenwich via Westferry and Mudchute, you won't go through any barriers so you just touch in once and out once. If you travelled via Angel and Deptford instead, you would need to touch out and back in at the barriers at London Bridge.

Once you're "inside" the system, you don't need to validate again until you've completed your journey.

If it is necessary to leave the system, you do need to touch out when leaving, then touch in again when re-entering. The journeys will then be joined together so that you don't get charged twice. This is known as an Out of Station Interchange.

Note that this isn't always so obvious at some stations, however. For instance, at Waterloo, if coming off the Waterloo and City line to the Northern or Bakerloo lines, you will not exit the ticket hall, and would feel like a normal interchange at most other stations. However, you will be expected to touch out on the standalone readers by the W&C portion and touch back in on the gates going to the Bakerloo/Northern lines.

Similar confusing (to the lay man) set ups exist at multi-modal stations like Stratford (Regional).

From memory, Bank will lead you to the tunnel between the central and northern lines. There's a reader as you enter the DLR bit asking Oyster users to 'validate'.

I didn't see any such reader joining the DLR at Bank today. Nor would there need to be one.

That was removed some years ago.

There used to be one there, but it was removed a few years ago. You can (and indeed are obliged to) just walk between the tube and DLR at Bank without needing to validate again.
