G'day all,

Having recently purchased a copy of the excellent Woodhead Countdown To Closure I noticed that into the early 1980's Wadsley Bridge still had a rail served goods shed.

I can think of two other similar examples at Chesterfield and Market Harborough but other contributions / memories would be very welcome!

Thanks in advance,

Richmond Commuter!

Colwyn Bay's goods shed was a late survivor, I seem to recall - I think it was only demolished to make way for the A55 Expressway road improvements. I remember seeing vans and coal wagons there until the late 1970s, or even early 1980s and dimly recall that it was accessed by a short tunnel under the road, I think.

Interestingly, its partial replacement was one of the few new general purpose freight terminals created in recent times, at Llandudno Junction, which had facilities for several different commodities like fuel or coal, I seem to recall, served by the then Speedlink network. It fell into disuse a few years after Speedlink was axed in the mid-1980s.

The one at Beeston (Nottingham) is still there. The surrounding yard, and I think the shed too, was in use as a cement terminal until 1990ish.

One of the best you will see anywhere is at Mansfield Woodhouse on the Robin Hood Line.

The old goods shed has been incorporated into the new station as a passenger shelter on the up side and even forms a sort of overall roof for the bay platform.
Very nice it looks too!

Yes I remember that and the Freightliner terminal too.

I've yet to take a trip over the Robin Hood Line but this has given me even more of an incentive to do so!

Incidentally can you remember whether the goods shed at Chaddesden Sidings (now a fire place showroom) was used as a wagon maintenance depot? I can remember driving past it on the A52 and seeing old mineral wagons parked up outside it.

Whilst we're on the subject, I can remember visiting coal merchants at St Mary's goods yard to purchase coal for my dad's 5 inch gauge locomotives. Nowadays of course it’s the local nick!

I can mention the goods shed at Canterbury West station which is now converted into a farm shop but the building inside still retains its railway atmosphere. Whilst sitting in the coffee shop I looked down behind the flooring and noticed that the track is still in situ albeit disconnected from the main line. The coffee shop has an excellent view into the station and is adjacent to the siding where the steam locos are serviced during "Cathedrals Express" tours, etc.

Well part of it is, the majority is now housing but the original goods shed at St Mary's survives as does the Bond Stores, both having been adapted for light industrial use.
I remember very well the row of tiny coal merchants offices along the edge of Fox Street, I lived very close by for some years and they survived until the early 1990's.

Lostwithiel survived until the 1980's and was dismantled then bought by someone who I think wanted to reassemble it somewhere but was refused permission.

It was subsequently destroyed I think. Can't recall the exact details but it was something along these lines.

One survivor is at Helmdon in Northamptonshire, on the (ex) line from Blisworth to Banbury, it's in use as part of the coach firms yard as a general store, I understand it is a listed building.

I sem to recall a large building that used to serve as a goods terminal in Swansea. This was still standing in 1984, if I remember correctly. I'm pretty sure it was gone by 1987 (I didn't use the train for three years!).

It used to stand on the north side of the tracks as you leave High Street station. The location is now used by a segregated bus road.

Llanelli goods shed is still standing to the east of the station. It is rather derelict now, and all attempts to find anothe ruse for it (workshops etc) have failed.

The surviving goods warehouse in Blackburn (Lancs) is still rail-connected. Not only does the track still survive inside the shed but it even occasionally gets used! Owned (I think) by a private haulage firm and it still gets used for trans-shipment between road and rail.

If I remember correctly its owned by Fogartys and I'd forgotten about that so thanks for reminding me! I think a similar facility in Bolton survived into the 1980's too. My in-laws own a farm near Nelson so I really should take a look next time we're up. Cheers Darren :)
